I saw something similar to this in another thread and I think they said it would be technically illegal for it to be hooked into your fuel system (diesel is ok but gas is not) but having it on a pump like that is legal.

I've been debating different approaches for this. I wanted a long range fuel tank (something like 30+) but the cost of putting that in and beefing up the leafs would negate savings, I would still have longer range but I just don't know that it will be worth it.

I may just put a 5 gal fuel jug in each corner and call it a day.
I don't like the idea of having too many on a rear swingout as they would be even easier access for whomever wants some but that is an option obviously. Seems to be cheaper and more easily distributed weight wise.

EDIT: easier to take in and out when not needed as well.

Much easier than finding a replacement or aux tank to bolt up underneath most likely, and easier to remove if need be, easier to hook up since it won't be plugged into the original piping, sounds like a good in between route

If you really needed to you could always throw a couple extra in the bed too. Then you're sitting at 25 gallons extra ha sounds like plenty to me

I was originally thinking, rip out the old, reroute exhaust if need be and install a new. Now I'm leaning towards what I said before, just a bunch of the 5 gal military style jugs. Making some removable braces to hold them will be much cheaper :D

Yea cause NWT makes a kit for a tank where your spare goes...800 bucks haha

Wild be easy to make tho or have an exhaust guy make as they are great at welding thinner steel

Technically there wouldn't be any money savings in carrying extra fuel on you other than what you might save in not having to stop and then get back up to speed again, but I'm pretty sure hauling all that extra weight in fuel would negate that and then some, so you may have more fuel but you would be getting slightly worse mpg. So really you are just saving time by not having to stop.
I think they are DOT regs against it. Has to do with the fact that gasoline is explosive and diesel isn't so the trucks can carry as much diesel on them as the want but there are regs about how big gasoline tanks can be or something. They didn't get into the specifics, just stated what was and wasn't illegal and I didn't look into it.

Not looking for mpg savings, looking for range

Yeah, the way you mentioned savings though seemed to imply money. haha:notsure:

30 gal auxiliary tank would be sweet though. haha

Yeah, I suppose I could have worded that better. Basically not worth the money to install a long range tank to me when I could get the same 25 gallons out of 5 jugs placed here and there that can be removed ha

So anywho . . . anyone know a good expedition joke or something?

Just found this thread, and scrolled through...basically lookin at pics and barely reading anything

I'd love to join this thread, unfortunately...I've not got much to add to it. My future plans are OBA + H20, RTT or topper to sleep in, possibly rear locker, refrigerator, and dakar heavy load leaf pack.

So far, have 2 gas cans, hi lift, OME suspension + aal. Planning a Pacific Northwest adventure, for as little as 1 wk, and as long as...well a few months? I'd love to be able to stay for however long I'd like in wherever I'd like to. Big cities planned on are: Tahoe, somewhere in the Redwoods, Portland, Seattle, Spokane, possibly Vancouver, Glacier Nat'l Park, Boise, SLC, Moab, Havasupei Falls.. and back to So-Cal. Maybe somewhere before So-Cal? I haven't thought that far yet

Here's what I've got so far:

I fixed the mounting system better than what's pictured, but this is the only pic I have of the Hi lift mounting.

I've got many plans for this rig, but so far...It's all I got, and I love it so far :D
