Hope they were at least hiking boots. I don't set foot in the back country if I'm not wearing proper hiking boots, like merrel, asolos, vasque or the like. Still you go into a creek your getting wet. Why didn't you build a fire?

Waterproof boots wouldn't have helped anything. The water was up to my knee. No matter what you're gonna soak your feet doing that.

Totally, but we were in a valley with nothing but alders (not much higher than the snow) so there were none to be had. Plus we didn't anticipate the helicopter taking 5 hours.

Dang Ben that's crazy. Similar thing happened to a buddy of mine when we hiked that 2 years ago in the spring. We were planning on camping up there for the night though. My buddies shoes were NOT waterproof at all and we ended up post holing the last half the the trail. I told him we should have just gone back but he decided to tough it out. Once we got the tent set up and in our sleeping bags, he was warming his feet up around our stoves for a good hour or two trying to get feeling back in them. That was pretty scary. As I was devouring my mountainhouse meal all I could think of was how thankful I was for goretex boots and gaitors.

Doc said another hour out there I would have lost both feet from the ankle down. Not what you want to hear when you're 22 and want nothing more than to be outside. This wasn't my first rodeo out there, the noob mistake was changing our original plan. Would have been fine, but we sought adventure and found it.

I've climbed 23 mountains in that front range, every one you can see from anchorage, and some you can't so to say I wasn't familiar with what to do is untrue. Just one of those 'doh' moments.

I will say though, if you ever have the opportunity to call your mother and tell her you just had your first helicopter ride and she should pick you up at the ER, do it. The response is priceless :)

Passed my gaiters to one of the whiny guys that went back to the original trailhead.

That's why we had to stop, I had lost so much feeling that I literally could not make my feet support myself. Imagine your feet falling asleep the worst you e ever had it, now take away the tingling and multiply the numbness by a thousand haha. I literally couldn't move.

Well I was considering those but I really dont have a use for them right now, thought my 880's were going to be fine but since they settled it isnt tall enough.
