Tacoma Spring refurbishing

Absolutely I would Jake, think we spoke about it at one time didn't we ?

Just need to find the right steel for it, SUA's are a little more technical but I plan to really build one for class desert racing, seriously if theres anyone out there that's actively involved in offroad racing that would like to give my springs a shot, give a shout out, & it would be $0 out of pocket for them, its a "win-win" They get to beat the shit out of a prototype & I benefit promotionally.....

not about LT, well, not with me at least.
yeah, the packs i've seen are really thick, like 10-14 leaves, so that would add cost, t seams that we would need long slightly thinner than stock so the travel isn't harsh, them make a progressive pack 'till the last 3 or so leaves.

i'll do some research, and maybe i'll be ready for them in a year or so.

 

Pretty sure you're not going to see the dez racers with progressives, keep in mind these guys hit 2 & 3 footers at speeds from 50mph - 80mph+

& tho' it doesnt always look or feel like it they are hitting those whoops & holes & wash outs very hard last thing you'd need is snapping the thin tapered ends of a progressive spring

 

so that's what progressive means, i was informed it meant there were more longer springs than needed.

For 2nd gens. its not necessary to leave in OVERLOAD if you don't want to I'll get some pics up with a new, easily fabbed clamp you can use with a couple self tapping screws...

Thanks man.. I like it better now tho' , I put on some 2nd gen. OME 883# coils so now I'm 3" in front & 3.15" in rear sits just about dead ass level finally...

 

What do you measure from, the far ends of the frame or some such?

 

Theres probably a hundred ways to do it, but I've settled to measure from center /top of hub (tire off/jack right under axle) up to top/center of wheel well..

What is the difference between Progressive and Linear? Does it relate to whether the center hole is centered (2st gen) or not centered (1st gen)?
If it does relate to the holes, what does mixing them up like that do to the ride?

 

A progressive spring is thick at the center holes & graduates to thin on leaf ends, a linear spring can be diff. lengths/ or dog eared but they remain linear because the thickness of leaf hasn't been disturbed, now popular belief from manufacturers seems to be to stack a number of thinner leafs onto one another & this becomes progressive, this is not correct & I've sent a couple emails to some un named spring manu. but have yet to hear anything back

 

There are a couple good reasons to "diamond cut" or "dog ear" the springs. One is to reduce STATIC and SLIDING friction between the leaves and the other, and far more important is to basically "radius" or break the corners to increase fatigue life.

And yet another reason to dog ear is to turn a constant thinkness spring, which is normally linear, into a non-linear or progressiver spring. Dog earing changes the strength in bending of the dog eared section of the spring.

You understand when in use, the leaves slide on one another as the suspension goes up and down.

The difference in "progressive" and "linear" is that in a progressive spring, the suspension gets progressively stiffer as the load increases, in a linear spring, the spring rate is constant and deflection can be calculated in inches of deflection/lbs of load. We can make a leaf spring in either configuration based on the relative arcs of the various leaves.
