From what I've seen on one ton builds the knuckles usually crack, but nothing a little plating cant fix. Are you going ball joint or king pin 60 front?

Only Ford outer knuckles are prone to cracking so I'd check them out real close in this area. For some reason Chevy knuckles are much stronger. Ball joint D60's don't have this problem and the knuckles are A LOT stronger. He's eyeballing the 78/79 KP D60 in the craigslist ad he posted ;)

Holy shit that trucks tall! What is the frame to ground measurement? Looks to be in the 28" range. Still not exactly sure why anyone needs the 5" kit. It looks to give about 10" of lift.

Thanks, is that basically the only thing (other than obvious stuff) to look out for?

Cracked or not, should they be gusseted anyway? Or can you swap in chevy knuckles?

Lol yeah I'm used to it so I don't really see it I guess. Honestly I've never measured. Well I like to go mudding and keeping my frame out of the mud makes it a lot easier. Plus when everything settles eventually it won't be as high. And mines 7 inches over stock.

My 87 KP60 came with complete Chevy outers. If you swap the knuckles, you have to swap everything from the knuckle out. Or you can gusset the Ford ones before they become a problem.

True! Run whatever you get a good deal on, really. That 78/79 Ford D60 would normally go for $1200 in that condition. Figure you could spend $450 on upgrades and be ahead of the game.

Full size axles are bad ass no doubt. But can be a bit over kill if you don't actually use them to there full potential.

At least for now, I think gusseting would probably be my best bet/the route I'd go with.

I'd rather a little overkill than worrying all the time that I'm gonna break shit.

True. If they are cracked, hopefully they aren't so bad where welding won't fix 'em. Good luck!

Overkill just means you can beat the ever living shit out of them and not break that axle. But it moves the weak point else where.

At that point, the next weak point would be the transfer case input. The chain drive transfer cases themselves are strong but the input is the next weak point.

All extremely good points but thegame hit it right on the money. My brother has a 2000 solid axle Tacoma 3.4 running 37s and beats the ever living shit out of his truck. The Dana 44 is well enough to hold up to the abuse and honestly the 8.4 tacoma rear end is stout as shit (runs his with an ARB locker). His front end has yet to even show a bit of stress after 3 years and over 30 wheeling trips on it. However the weak tacoma transfer case has blown out on his truck before and as stated is a poit of concern. I have a few videos of him wheeling for those who would like to see.

Yeah lets see the video! Youtube it :) What mods does he have on the D44? Must be pretty extensive to be able to "beat on it." And for what you spend on a D44 to beat on, you could spend the same and have a stock-ish D60 that can handle the abuse even better. And for as cheap as 14 bolts are, it would be a no-brainer to throw that out back. But hey, half ton axles work for some people, the initial cost of a D60 is hard to swallow for most

Aftermarket knuckles, high steer, and warn hubs is all I know of. The only issue with full size is you have to switch the axle in the rear as well. I don't have a youtube account I'll just add it to TW Live then Post them here. A Dana 60 for the front built can cost well over 1200. He paid 400 for everything.
