2012 v6 synthetic or not?

Regardless. I priced the dino from O'Reillys and I priced the synthetic from O'Reillys. Fair comparison.

I'm sure dino oil is $10 cheaper at Walmart too. Doesn't change the fact that 10k synthetic changes are no more cost effecient than 5k dino changes.

 

I agree with doing the change every 5, which is why I do. But I dont doubt that the oil would last 10000 while still providing good protection. I am curious about why you believe both Mobil 1 and Pennzoil to be inferior though. Never dealt with Pennzoil but have had good results with Mobil 1.

 

Clearly you're missing the point or honestly have nothing better to do with your time. I agree that the amount paid in oil is just barely cheaper for dino oil but the total cost with time factored in isn't even close.

 

Mobil makes Mobil 1 from a low quality base stock then adds detergents and other additives and sells it as a high dollar quality oil. Pennzoil is made from a parafin base stock not crude oil and can have extreme temp spikes.

I have a `12 TRD Sport V6 and just received the card from Toyota Care which states that it needs oil change every 5000 miles or 6 months which ever comes first. Also, the oil type is Conventional. I had 2011 Camry I4 and it required 0W-20 Synthetic. I have a 2010 Lexus RX350 and RX450h and they both require 0W-20 Synthetic.

So, what is the require oil for my 2012 TRD Sport V6?

I changed out the Dino for Mobil-1 at 1,000 miles. And now I'm at 5K and I'll change it again w/ Mobil-1. And every 5K.

 

Conventional oil is dino oil (non-synthetic).

Your 2012 TRD Sport V6 engine calls for ILSAC multigrade engine oil with a viscosity of SAE 5W-30. SAE 10W-30 if you are in a pinch.

 

according to my 2013 manual the 4.0 v6 is conventional oil at 5K or six months the 4cyl is synthetic

 

Motorsports professor at UNCC. Granted Mobil 1 makes a good product for the racing industry but the product the consumer buys is very different.

 

it should say in the book that we have regular oil and its 5000k miles.

 

I'll keep this short and to the point. Synthetic, same weight and type that the manu calls for that motor. Oil Manu is simple castrol, valvoline, or mobile, which ever your prefer. As for length, takes a while for synthetic to break down. I tend to go 10-12k on my catrol syntec. Comes out light brown everytime. No need for any other arguements. And stay away from royal purp or lucas crap. All your paying for is hype.

 

Hello all, I am new to TW - been lurking for awhile but this is my first post. Aquired a 2002 DC off-road 3.4l in March, 194,000 miles (US truck, I live in Canada), my first truck. Immediately put in Mobil 1 5w-30. Not sure what the previous owner used, but before I bought I took the valve covers off and it was immaculate. I change oil and filter every 5000 miles. Went on a 3000 mile, 10 day jaunt in August through the Rockies. The oil level did not change at all, so it would not appear that the synthetic is "blowing past the rings."

I use Mobil 1 based on my experience with my other car - a 91 Mercedes 190, 2.6l gas engine. Acquired it with 210,000 KM on it, switched to Mobil 1. It now has 407,000 KM (255,000 miles) on it and runs like a watch - I top it off as it burns about 1 litre between oil changes.

This doesn't sound true.

 

None taken. Take as you may, I wasn't bashing Mobil 1 just throwing out some info. My main problem with it is the price, I can't see paying 8-10 dollars a quart when you get equal or better quality for 4-6.

Edit: if you have been using an oil for a long time don't change, engines dont really care for change.

 

the 5 qt jugs of Mobil-1 are under 30 bux...and often on sale for closer to 25.

I was meaning type, not changing it at all. Basically if you've been using conventional for the life of the truck don't switch to a synthetic.

This
2012 and 2013 2.7 come with 0w20 synthetic from the factory, 10,000 mile service intervals.
The 4.0 comes with 5w20 conventional and carries a 5000 mile service interval.

Note that Toyotacare specifies 5000 even with synthetic, so if you have Toyotacare coverage, 5000 miles is required.
