uh you know that the 8.0 is the TRD OR e-locker right? and the 8.4 is a stronger diff. hopefully you just got that mixed up.

yep....said it sooooooooooooooooooo many times it gets the best of me.

no need to trade a truck in for a locker especially since most people I know prefer the stronger rear with an ARB over the electronic locker.

Yeah... if your gonna be upside down, mine as well just buy a 2013. Will lose about $7k instantly, BUT, your truck will be worth a lot more for a lot longer. If you get the 08 you won't lose as much on the deal up front, but the value of the 08 will drop so fast that it will hurt you in the long run pretty bad. I'd say look at 13's TRD off-road, skip the entune/jbl cuz it sucks. Get a brand new double cab 4x4 OR for like $30-33k and sell or trade yours for about $23k.

If I were to get this 08 I don't think I would trade it in for a long time. I was looking at 13 but there few around my area, I'm going to go up there Saturday hopefully I can get a good deal. And as far as having the SR5 package it really doesn't matter to me I have a aftermarket head-unit so I can easily get the back up camera back which is the only thing I like about the package.

The '13 will depreciate much faster than the '08. I don't understand the logic.

    AWESOME!!! Love that show!!!!

To the OP- I wouldn't necessarily flat out say "don't do it!" since I see that you would be going from a 2wd to a 4x4 BUT, just be careful! You will definitely be upside down in you trade so, you can end up putting yourself in a bad spot (financially) in a hurry! I am all about some instant gratification but still, I would advise that since you have lived this long with a 2wd, wait till you pay it down some more before you do any trades!!! I personally make it a rule to never trade anything until I owe considerably less than its trade in value (that way I am never upside down) and I think this is a good rule to live by. Just my opinion, take it or leave it!

Now for a completely crazy idea: On a totally different note, I don't know if this is true of Toyotas but, a 4x4 swap is a completely bolt in affair on a Frontier (have seen this done) so, maybe you can convince on of your buddies to go solid axle and you can buy his 4x4 stuff for cheap and swap it into your truck? (IDK if this works for Toyotas though, perhaps someone will chime in?) This would keep you from getting hosed on your trade and hosed on the new (to you) truck purchase and could give you a dirt cheap 4x4 conversion! (assuming a good buddy cheap deal and doing the work yourself)

Okay, so I went up there today to look at it. Outside and inside are mint. Went to look under the truck and there are multiple spots with rust starting to develop, a lot of it looked like surface rust but there were a few spots that looked a little iffy. So I just left after a half hour looking at the truck and waiting for a salesman to open up for a test drive. Do you guys really think its worth do do a 4x4 swap on my rig? How much would that even cost? I really wouldn't even know where to start. None of my buddies have Tacoma's they all have Fords or Chevy's.

I wouldn't even consider a 2WD to 4WD conversion. It would take more time, money, and problems than trading to a real 4WD. Either enjoy the truck that you have or get the truck that you want.

We also live in the rust belt. Rust under a vehicle is just the way it is, and I wouldn't worry about it unless it's bulging or flaking.

Sounds like you might be able to find a better dealer too.... ;)

Most of the rust looked like surface rust. I think there was one spot that looked like it could start to flake. I wanted to test drive it but there were no sale associate's around so I left. Everything else looked mint.

Not sure how things are in IL, but in IA those warranties are considered insurance policies, and you can cancel and get the cash back on a prorated basis. Should you decide to get rid of the truck you have, that is. ETA: Or even if you keep it.
