    I just joined the forum and was looking for a little help. My brothers got an '07 tacoma so i'm not new to the trucks or brand or anthing or offroading. in a few months i'm gonna get a project vehicle, something that runs well the day i buy it but somethin g i can work on and have for years and years, fixing it up and adding what i can. I was wondering if you guys could tell me want to look for and maybe what to stay away from, how many miles is too much stuff like that. I'm hoping to spend no more than $6,000. I'd really appreciate any help

    with that budget I don't think you're going to find a 2nd gen tacoma. Might find a 5 lug ,single cab, 4cyl model but they are limited on what you can do.good luck

    with 6k your more likely to find a 1st gen.

    oh sorry guys ya definitely looking for a first gen realistically with over 100,000. i dont know why i left out this info but i'm looking for a 2 door manual 4x4. i guess i didn't know how many miles would be too many, i assume that the 2 doors only come with 4 cylinders which would be ideal for me. something like this seems nice but some buying tips would be so helpful...

    just watch out for frame rot (rust from inside the frame)

    theres a huge thread on that here...

    outside that...you really cant go wrong with a tacoma if its for trail use

    alright i'll definitely be sure to check for frame rot, it'd definitely be for off road use, no insurance or license plate all fun...

    do you mean typically which parts need replacing first?

    at least on the 01-04 v6 tacomas...the timing belt and water pump...around 90K miles

    you can go to a dealer and thet are able to run the vin# to ck and see if the frame has had the inspection under warranty. it shouldn't cost you anything out of your pocket!

    i've heard of some timing belt issues, i guess i'm wondering how many miles are too many, i want to buy something that i can have as a dedicating off roader for years, would something like 160,000 be to much to start with?

    in fact...im at 104K on my 02 and (knock on wood) no timing belt problem

    luckily...the 3.4 v6 is a non interference motor and if the timing belt breaks...it doesnt ruin the motor...

    for a dedicated trail rig i would have no issues buying a tacoma with up to (maybe 200K miles)
