I have a question for all of you folks who truly use your truck's off road capability, modified or otherwise. What recovery gear pieces are the most essential? I will be starting my build, hopefully, in Jan BUT recovery gear is pretty damn important so I figure I will start with that first. Tips? Suggestions for mounting?

    Thanks in advance. :D

If you have nothing at all, I would start with a shovel, a shackle and a 30' strap, all will still be useful when you get a winch.

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
High Lift jack with a jack mate and off road base. Snatch strap, shackles, and hitch shackle receiver. Shovel and pulaski.

In not so sure about the hilift. you cant use it as a lift unless you have some sort of aftermarket bumper. but it can be used as a winch so in that case i would say hilift, chain, strap, shackel, shovel, small air compressor, and some tools

    Number one: safety.

If you have a trailer hitch, get a hitch mounted "d ring" receiver.

Don't just get any strap. Get a real snatch strap.

    Like ARB(8000kg strap for Tacos)

    Or TJM
    [IMG]

    Gloves
    [IMG]

Hi lift jack(great if you have a place to lift by)

    With a JackMate:

Another awesome hi lift accessory is the LiftMate:

If you're going to use the jack mate to pull yourself out of a hole, you'll need a tree saver
    [IMG]

    Chain(no pic required)

    A few bow shackles
    [IMG]

That's a great start. You can pull, lift, and "winch" yourself out of trouble with these tools. Just have the knowledge of how to use them.

Comealongs are very handy. Winch would be way better.

Toilet paper (no need to loose a sock out wheeling).

    battery jumper/compressor combo.

    Jumper cables.

    Plus everything everyone else said.

When I got into this stuff I had a strap and a shovel and a chain, I had gloves and flashlights and that crap too. I also had a TJ.

I moved on to the Tacoma and for a while the minimum (but not often is even that carried by most) was doing the trick, but then it wasn't and it switched really damn quick. From there I invested in all manner of crap. It doesn't take long for you to realize what an excellent investment you've made. A couple good solo stucks and you'll be wishing you hadn't cheaped out.

Until you get out there and do some self and other recoveries and see them done, properly, the best thing you can do is start looking up safety minded 4wd extraction videos on youtube -- IMO.

Also, don't use cheap chinese shackles, or straps with hooks, attach only to SOLID points, no shackles etc... to connect straps, etc... With as much force is involved in recoveries, always think safe. Never pull from a trailer ball.

This went through that tire, sounds like the mount broke off. You can imagine had that hit someone.

This isn't really related but I saw it and had to post it. The slow motion part is my favorite, never gets old.

I guess it does show how quickly shit can go wrong.

i have not done much off roading and never used a spotter. but from the looks of it that spotter sucks! before it flipped the acted like they wear going to turn the wheel to the left, but turned it right. i think if they turned it left and keep the front tire from falling down it would not have flipped.

and lest we forget...practice, practice and practice.

One of the best ways to practice is park on a decent grade and pretend you have to winch up the grade with tools available. Having a 9500# warn makes it easy, but with a high lift jack, tree saver, chain and shackles, it could be a long afternoon...

So I was bored and feeling like burning a hole in my wallet here is what I bought this morning, still need shackles and some sort of winch. Slowly but surely...I'll get there. Then I can practice. Thanks for the info guys it helps alot.

That is a good start, BUT, you are going to have trouble using the snatch strap and the high lift for self recovery...the snatch strap is going to STRETCH and use up most of the effective jacking range.

Now you need a piece of 3/8" chain with the correct ends to attach the jack to the truck (and give yourself a good 10' feet of working room from the jack to the truck) and a second chain with at least one end as a chain hook so you can shorten the chain every 2.5 feet of jacking cycle.

I find that passing a link of chain through the bolt in the moving part of the jack works pretty well. A sliding type hook in the top of the jack works well also.
