I'm closing in on 100 caches found. I never expected there to be so many caches, it's turned into a really awesome hobby. I go so many places for work, it's fun to see the different places that other people like in a given area. I've found some great places that I otherwise never would have seen.

What's the favorite GPS device? I've been using my iPhone, and it works pretty well most of the time but I've had a couple DNFs because I couldn't get phone service. I guess that means it's time to find a handheld GPS.

Since you're used to the iPhone, you'll be happier with a unit that has a 3-axis compass.

    What's your budget?
My husband and I have 2 units.
    Garmin Oregon 450 and a Garmin 62s.
I think the 62 is a better unit.

Look online... Do some research.. And look for USED units on Craigslist or eBay.

You're doing it the hard way!! LOL

Not that I'm trying to sell 'memberships' - but if you really enjoy this hobby, the $30 Premium membership allows you to run Pocket Queries. Pocket Queries are used to load up to 5,000 geocaches in your GPS at a time (that number varies depending on the unit).

I'm not involved, but I am interested in getting started. I was on my bike out in the woods the other day and I saw a guy walking around with his phone in his hand, checking out something. I figured he must have been out there trying to loccate something, looked like kind of a fun hobby I could do on the bike.

5000 @ once?! I don't have enough time for that many! Great info but it would take me 25 years to get all them. Plus I get transferred every 4 years! I will take my every couple at a time for fewer but maybe someone can use it......Tks!

Me and my wife have been wanting to start doing this. Not sure if there would be any in our area though. Is there a web site or somewhere that tells you where they are or a set of rules for it or anything?

    That's not the point really...
They're all in there for as long as you need or want them. They stay there until you mark them as 'found' or load new Pocket queries in it. You don't have to go to the website and 'pick & choose' which geocache you want to load (individually & manually). Just put the GPS in your truck (carry spare batteries) and the geocaches will be in there whenever you are ready to use them.

It sounds like you're more of a 'casual' geocacher - which, you don't need to load 5,000 in the GPS.

For the rest of us who are really into the hobby....Handhelds, Pocket Queries, GSAK.... Yeah, I even have geocaches loaded in my Garmin Nuvi. My husband and I have 1490 finds in a little over 1.5 years (Lieblweb)

    As Doc4216 already mentioned... www.geocaching.com

You have to signup and create an account (free). This is where your geocache finds are tracked and how many you find. Login and click around.

If you have a smartphone.... Go to whatever website you download your APP's from and search for geocaching. There should be atleast one FREE app that will allow you to get started. Load up the APP..... sign on using your newly created account. These APP's are directly connected to www.geocaching.com - so you need to signin using your newly created account/password.

After doing that....there should be a button that says "Find nearbye" - and the geocaches closest to your location will / should pop up.

I'm familiar with the iphone app - if you ever have questions.
