First and foremost, you should be responsible or your own belongings. Secondly, I work at a dealership and have had people accuse us if stealing all kinds of stuff. We were accused of stealing some Snapon tools from a customers car. So, we paid for new tools. Could it be proven? No. A porter, service advisor, tech and reconditioning crew had touched the car, then it was parked in the back lot where any dealership personnel had access. So we took care of it. I've had a guy say we took his home info, went to his house and stole a blanket and a roll of quarters from his living room. Obviously a nut job. I also had a customer ask me to investigate the loss of $2 in quarters. The tech admitted it and was shitcanned. We've also found money, in one case a $100 bill shoved way under a seat with some trash when we worked on an underseat connector. I put it in an envelope and stapled it to the repair paperwork and made the customer's day. I do what I can within reason, but after a week? I've also had people call me days after we "stole something" to apologize because the found it. I think you've got no leg to stand on without catching someone red handed on video or through another employee's statement.

Based on what you read around here you'd swear dealerships were full of murderers and felons. There are good people just trying to earn a living with a trade. I'm sure that there are many people on here that have either been dishonest or worked with people who were. Sheesh.

My point exactly. It could have been anyone, doesn't have to be an employee. You also have to keep in mind that if they take from a customer, they are risking their good paying job to steal a measly $2.00 in quarters as in the case above. You've really got to be stupid to do that. It's simply not worth it.

If it's not on tape, it could have been someone just walking around in the lot.

I would call the dealership, tell them you are filing a theft report. Ask for their INS policy info to file a claim.

Send a note to their insurance Co. They should have a garage keepers liability policy. Not sure it will have a theft condition.
Include - Value of item with printouts from the world wide web. I am sure under $75 bucks.

If all works out you'll get a check for the value of the item.

PM if you have more questions. I work in the INS industry.

    Thanks,

What you are asking is that every car that enters a garage has a full inventory check done on it to avoid anything like this in the future. Because, it really is another person's responsibility to make sure you know what you are leaving in the vehicle. Then your 20 min oil change will take 2 hours.

Am i saying theft is acceptable? NO WAY!
Am I calling for personal accountability? ABSOLUTELY.

There's an old saying, "keep honest people honest". Take 5 minutes before you leave your vehicle in the hands of someone else for an entire afternoon. We've had people leave laptops, GPS units, iPhones, iPads, iPods, money, jewelry, I even had social security paperwork on the front seat before. Don't ask for trouble to come find you, be proactive and be careful.

    This.

And I don't care about signs saying "Not responsible for ... " Obviously they are. If an idiot can sue McDonald's when she spilled her own coffee, anything can fly in a lawsuit.

Call it a loss and report to the police that you feel you may have had a magazine stolen, to cover your ass. Bottom line is it will come down to your word against theirs.
Be more responsible and dont leave loaded magazine in your truck when dropping off to dealership or anytime you know other people will be in and out of it.

I don't get why people think that this mag not being reported is going to put his dick in a vice. Serial numbers not on mags, fingerprints with polymer difficult, and even if you lost it one still needs the gun to make it go bang. I would venture he does not want to contact law enforcement. At this point all conversations are pretty much moot. Good luck in recovering your goods. I would not count on it though. M

Not the same issue...At the dealership, a single employee against all company rules stole personal property. At McDonalds, the coffee was INTENTIONALLY super hot by company policy to prevent patrons from lingering for a second cup.

And the women received third degree burns to her pubis area...that required several surgeries to repair.

Thank you for helping affirm my information that not all dealerships are crooks and thieves who "protect their own". I have seen and heard some very similar stories myself. You should hear some of them. lol

My question for the OP would be when was the last time he checked to see if the magazines were in the door? It seems that this would be something that would be placed but not checked on a daily basis.

Please go back and look at the OP...This was a single act by a single employee, and I assume company policy prohibits theft...

    Maybe, maybe not.

The would have recognized you from dropping the truck off.
    You showed confidence.
You went directly to your truck, took something, and left.

Had you fished around for a few minutes, or looked into several different vehicles, you would have been more likely to be confronted.
    Having bewbz helped too :D

There is no reason to report this to the police. It's a mag and some ammo not a gun. They will not waste time investigating a $50 theft. They may take a report to appease you if you complain enough but that will be the end of it. This thread is getting more time then any investigation will.

Next time leave your iPad and a $100 bill. Maybe the guy will leave the mag alone.

    And get a console vault.

That maybe be hard to explain there is still implication were you part of this? Why are your finger prints on the clip? Did you supply the clip? Got the cops involved man up to the fact it was in the truck.

So, is it magazine or magazines? Reason I mention it is that I know I move stuff around all the time, and it sounds like something I would have remembered I had at the range and pulled it out to get a few more rounds shot before going home. If you have a couple in there from time to time, chances are you moved it, not them.

I've also had a nice Surefire light I "always" keep in my glovebox "stolen" from my glovebox for about 15 minutes after a dealer service before I found it in my office bag.
