So I've decided I want to buy my first gun. I've done multiple searches to find out what exactly is legal to buy/own in california. I know I know, not much is legal in CA. All of the information is so spread out I can't really get an idea of what is legal and what isn't. Can anyone give me some guidance?
I was looking at the XDm but I think I read that its not legal in CA due to the magazine capacity? Why can't I just buy it with a smaller magazine??? Help me out CA gun owners. Any info would be helpful. THanks

Check the above Calguns site. They have flow charts on what's legal and not.

But generally, gun shops now are very savy on what they can or can't sell cause it's eyeballed so much here (In kali).

Sooooo, every new gun you see on the shelves is what we can buy here.

The trouble is with used guns. Some CANNOT be sold to fellow natives. Like the old guns designated as Assault Weapons.

There's a list of manufacturers and configurations that once you want to sell these items, they must be sold out of state.

Again, generally every new gun sold in shops are Good To Go.

I had an XD and it functioned flawlessly.

But for simplicity, and time proven reputation, I stay with Glock and stock parts.

Check out Turners. I think they have 2 locations in San Diego. I have bought 2 fire arms from the Turners in Reseda.

Sig is a very smart choice. I have always wanted a 229 or 226. I have fired both at the range and love them.

I own several guns, the (pre ban) AR15 I enharated from a family member. The 30 rd mags came from a friend (Marine). Everything else I have purchased.

What are you planning on using the gun for? Can you even get a CCW in Cali?

Check out the Walther (or Smith & Wesson) P99. My first handgun and my favorite. Fits my hand perfectly. The Springfield XD and XDm are nice too and you get a lot of gun for the money.

You can get a CCW in Kali. But only in certain parts. LA proper is impossible. You have to be a celebrity or politician.

I think Diane Feinstein, who is absolutely opposed to guns in every way, hypocritically, has a concealed carry. Apparently her life is more important than the common man or woman's.

Orange County, former Sheriff used to always issue for a good cause. A friend of my was a realtor in OC and he got permission because he said he showed properties in bad parts of town at odd hours. He showed apartment complexes for sale, which in Santa Ana, especially, was indeed a bad area.

As an ER nurse, I get psych patients and gang members who threatened me and said they'd kill me, etc. So I think if I was in OC in the past, I would have gotten issued one.

Now the new OC Sherrif is more aware of the complaints that the former Sheriff seemed to issue to everyone and it's harder to get a CCW.

Just depends on the County. Seems generaly big city's don't issue, like LA, San Fran, but smaller, lesser know farm counties issue.

So you don't get a gun where you need it, but get to carry where it's safer.

Speaking of Dian Feinstein, here are some paraphrases when questioned about why she carried a handgun.........

"Because less than twenty years ago, I was the target of a terrorist group. It was the New world Liberation Front. They blew up power stations and put a bomb at my house when my husband was dying of cancer and the bomb didn't detonate".....

"I was very lucky. But, I though of what might happen. Later the same group shot out all of the windows of my home, and I know the sense of helplessness that people feel".

"I know the urge to arm yourself because that's what I did. I was trained in firearms".

"I carried a concealed weapon. I made the determination that if somebody was going to take me out, I was going to take them with me".

So, again, we regular people are not subjected to crime, harrassment, robbery, or murder. Only important people are allowed to protect themselves.

Yep, 10 round limit in California. Any thing you buy in California should be legal in California, for the time being. I have an XD 9mm and love it.

Check out the NRA's site. http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/#?st=CA

They do a pretty good job of keeping up with all the laws out there for each state. Just be sure to check the date on your state's page.

Also, as for the Sig's - I've owned a P232, and currently have a P220SCT and a P239 (both in .40), and I love them. Customer service is awesome, too. Broke the decocker lever on the P239 while installing Hogue grips, and I sent it back and they repaired it and finished installing the Hogue grips for me at no charge.

I'm just looking for a gun to shoot at the range and for home defense. I thought about just getting a .22 because ammo is cheaper and I've heard they're good guns to learn with, but I also want a gun with some stopping power for home defense. I'll probably go with a 9mm since I figure its a happy medium and I'm somewhat familiar with them (Used a 9mm Beretta occasionally in the military).
I like the XD/XDm's for their simplicity and they seem to get good reviews. I won't really know more until I get to a range (going this week) and try out some guns. Thanks for all the help.

True. But I'm just torn between buying something like a .22 now and having to spend more money later for something bigger OR just buying something like a 9mm now. I figure I've used a 9 a few times before it shouldn't be too much to handle (i'm 6'2 250lbs). Any thoughts?

My opinion is that it goes back to your driving force of purchasing the firearm.

If you're more interested in getting out there and plinking away then buy the .22. They're fun as hell and ammo is still relatively cheap assuming you can find it. May I suggest the Ruger 10/22.

If you're more concerned about self defense then go with the 9mm. Ammo is harder to come by and is more expensive as of late so you may not be able to get the practice in that you desire. I'd also suggest thoroughly studying the laws pertaining to defending yourself in Cali.

Shotguns are great for home defense and really fun to shoot also. Shells are not too expensive and are still very easy to find.

    Just my $.02.

I've been thinking about a shotgun as well. Maybe a mossberg 500, they're under $300 from what I've seen. If I get a .22 I was looking at the p22. They come highly recommended. I'm supposed to go to the range this week with friend who is a gun owner. Hopefully they'll have plenty to try out.

    I like the mossberg 500s. I have a Remington 870 myself.

My buddy has a P22 and I LOVE THAT THING!!! It's a great little .22 and looks just like it's big brother the P99. Very slick. I'll get one some day.

For a beginner, I might suggest not starting with a .40. It's a smaller bullet than the .45 yes but higher case pressures and tendencies for snappier perceived recoil. The .45ACP and 9mm are more comparable in feel (more of a push with the 45 and a flick with the 9mm) with the main difference being in price. You can expect to pay ~50% more for the .45 ammo which makes a huge difference in trigger time.

With handguns in general, height and weight have absolutely nothing to do with how well you'll shoot your gun. It's all about proper grip and stance.

With the current run on ammunition, a .22 might be a better choice. You'll have more practice time/ammo which leads to better trigger control.

With regards to the P22, many people have good luck with it. I owned one and wasn't too particularly impressed. FYI some common problems were the trigger bars were chipping into the zinc frame and 5" bbls cracking at the front sight post. I had the chipping issue and a weak recoil spring which didn't allow full battery. Any stronger of a spring and the recoil couldn't operate the slide fully.

I might suggest looking into a Buckmark or a Ruger for a .22 route if you so choose.
