In my opinion, even with lack of insurance, you should see a doctor first. Talk to the doctor about not having insurance, they may be able to help. Chiropractors have their uses, but depending what the issue is, they may not be the best choice. Also with the chiro offer of a free x-ray, that will only show bone, not soft tissue. An MRI would show soft tisse damage. He can check for proper alignment of your spine, but if it is a disc related problem, you will have just thrown $75 away. A chiro can do some for discs, but exercise and proper stretches will do just as much, without costing anything. If you have a good stomach, take 800 mg of Ibuprofen 2 or 3 times a day with food for a couple weeks. Don't skip doses, it needs to build up in your system. Wear a lower back support belt focus on proper posture. Oh yeah, the lazy-boy is hell for your back too, try just a flat floor. Sorry this was so long, I just went thru this very same thing this past spring. I couldn't even walk. A sneeze would drop me to my knees. 3 herniated discs, and a cracked vertebra. Good luck.

See a medical Doctor. Chiropractors are usually just interested in how many visits they can get from you.

I would see both a MD and a Chiro. Or atleast get an xray to find out whats wrong. Most likely the MD will give you some pain meds and it will feel better, then probaly come back. The chiro will work with you over time to adjust your spine to get it where it needs to be. My wife is a chiro so Im a bit biased, but I know there are crap ones out there. If you go the chiro route, stick with it. Its not a 1 and done deal. I had a similar issue, never went to a chiro before. I couldnt sit down for any time over an hr, 3 weeks at the chiro I was fine.

Not a good plan for someone with no insurance and needing to minimize the cost.

True, see if the chiro can get an xray then.

MD route could be xray, office visit, pain meds, PT...that can get $$$ quick.

X-ray wont do any good if it is a herniated or bulging disc. You need an mri to properly diagnose it if you think that your injury may be disc related. There is alot of people trying to give you advice based on their own injurys or experiences and yours may be completely different. To me te sharp pain sounds like it could be disc related, but i only say this because of my own experiences. I have 2 herniated discs and had surgery a few years ago which is the only thing that helped, i tried everything else.
So what i think you need to do (sucks because of the money) is either get some insurance, or just go to your doctor, they will send you to a specialist if they think it is seriuos. Then the specialist will most likely want an mri. Not cheap. I had insurnace when i went through my back injury, but it wasnt good insurance, i ended with over $10,000 in medical bills. Worth every penny to me.

This. Go to a doctor first if you think it could be a seriuos injury.

This is true. It is how I found out that Arthur has a hold on my lower spine. Proper streaching has made the pain go away for almost 3 years now.

    Head unit. That's it.
I had lower back pain so badly that I couldn't breathe. Thought it was something with my spine as it went all the way up my back. Went to the chiropractor. Only helped for a few days. Wife talked me into getting a massage. Turns out my muscles were so tight that they were pulling my back out of adjustment. Now I get a massage about every three months, its cheaper than the chiropractor and it lasts way longer. Stretching for an hour each morning helps a bunch as well.

often the reason the muscles are so tight and bunched up IS because of the body being misaligned. i can relate completely with OP and have had sporadic lower back issues. money and health insurance are definitely a bummer but i would make cuts elsewhere to remedy the lower back pain i have experienced. hope it all works out.

Forgot what they are called, but I think there's a Doc. out there that can crack bones and perscribe meds.
I went to a chiropractor yrs. ago, and I'm pretty sure the X-rays showed the damaged discs.
In my case the pain went L>R, and actually got worse before it got better because that's when the spasms started.
Never thought you could have that much pain in your back!
I would try a chiro. first, and go from there. I have 3 buddies that have had back operations, 2 are on disability and pain pills, 1 is still working and not on meds., but still has some pain. Like anything, if too much damage, the chiro. can't help.
A lazy-boy was mentioned, as being bad. A GOOD mattress is a must!
Acupunture was mentioned. Also know a guy that had that done for his back, and was pleased with the results.
All you can do is sort through what's been suggested, and start somewhere!!

A friend of mine was experiencing low back pain. Thought it was muscular. Tried chiropractor and tried physical therapy. When those didn't work, he went to the MD. Turns out he had a fractured vertebrae. He has no idea how he did it. Wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary. He is now wearing a back brace and restricted from any physical activity.

Don't say this to freak you out. Just to give you another option to think about.

I have a cracked vertebra as well. From when I was told by my specialist, they will not heal, and could have happened years ago or yesterday, so pin pointing the actual injury is tough. Kind of freaked me out.

Maybe not in a universal healthcare system. Hence the first exam for $75 with free xrays the OP mentioned, to get you in the door.

There's a lot of issues with the Chiro profession as far as HC goes. Its a doctrate program, so you pay that in tuition. Insurance companies are across the board as far as reimbursment goes, theres a lot of lack of general knowledge of Chiro as well and medicare does not cover it. So they gotta "sell" it to make money, but its also not a 1 and done thing either. If you're sitting for long periods of time, your spine will get out of alignment. Same if you're overweight, or doing manual labor. Bones get moved around, nerves, muscles, soft tissues all get affected. Generally though, if you eat healthy, get adjusted, keep a good weight, you will see a vast improvement as far as general health goes.

As far as the OP goes....I think it would be safe to start with the most minimal invasive procedure then go from there. Back surgery sucks. Either a Chiro or MD will want your money and will charge whatever they can to get the most out of insurance these days. Going to a back specialists and getting an MRI will be the most $$$ route.
