I wasn't trying too start a discussion on what should be cut, but just trying too state that the cost shouldn't be a deterrent.

There are many districts which already employ armed security on campus. I think it's up to the schools to make that decision.

Me personally? I think there are better places to spend the money because like someone else said, just because they are there doesn't put them in the right place at the right time.

Well the difference is that you brought up Obama, bailouts and ceo's vacations. That's where I thought you went off topic.

Now I'm going off topic, anyways, back too teachers and guns.

    vouchers...

remove the federal government from the education business. allow parents and local school boards (financed by property tax dollars) make decisions concerning school security.

if a private school wants to surround the building with a moat and .50 cal. guns...so be it.

if a government (county/city) school wants to follow suit...or allow the place to be a shooting gallery...so be it.

let the market (and parents) decide.

the cream will rise to the top.

i dont like the idea of arming teachers.. or having security guards. i think if youre going to do it, do it right, and dont get some turd in there with a ruger .480 revolver who weighs 300lbs while dieting, and cant spell worth a fuck. i think alot of teachers would be hard pressed to carry guns anyways...

Try telling the people who advocate having CCW teachers and who almost sound convinced having that would have absolutely prevented the tragedy and others like it.

FWIW (and it's obviously a very small sample size) but all the teachers I know (and I know a lot) wouldn't want to have themselves armed in their classroom and having that right around their kids. It's easy to sit back and say all teachers should be able to CCW, however it's missing the critical point of how many would actually WANT to. So if you're going to decide you want weapons in the school having more resource officers seems like the only logical thing, if the armed route is the one a school decides to take.

I work "armed security". I think the active shooter training we have is on par if not better than some of the PDs out there. When I qualified, I qualified on the ICE qual...just saying its better than normal..

    For a point of reference

My area already utilizes school resource officers in each and every school in the district...they have been there for several years (even long before Columbine)

They are trained in a multitude of useful skillsets such as active shooter training, as well as being educators and counselors for the students. They are selected by both the department and a board of educators from the school districts

Initially, it may seem expensive to add a bunch of officers, but I def. believe the pros outweigh the cons

Unfortunately, I don't believe there is a perfect answer for completely stopping this type of crime because people will always believe it "cant happen here" and won't take the proactive steps such as completely limited access with metal detectors and the like because no one wants the school to be or feel like a prison

With that being said, having a properly trained officer on school property at all times can minimize the risk, and minimize damage should something happen. If done properly, the SRO program can also open up a line of communication between a student who may be troubled and proper authorities.

    you misunderstand...

the cream is the school (not the kid)...any parent with 1/2 a brain will send their kid to the better (more secure) school. because the vouchers will give the parent the choice.

the non cream schools will get the darwin disease.

There are security officers out there that have standards. I believe YOU just insulted me. I am not a turd. I am in shape. I carry 9mm glock, MP5, 870 shotgun. I am pretty sure you have no idea about private security

They definitively need to be picky about who has a gun. I'd definitively prefer it to be a police officer than a teacher. But maybe a couple armed teachers would be better than nothing at all.

Great points. I think that's kind of the role our resource officer has at our high school and not just to stand by watching guard.
