but you have no powers of arrest. your sole job would be to walk around the school and intimidate kids into not shooting the place up. if you put an actual police officer in the school, to develop relationships with kids, teach elective classes, run intern programs for HS kids though the PD, handle all school related arrests/investigations and reports, counsel kids who are being abused by parents, etc... the list goes on and on. you gain respect from the kids that way, maybe participate in some of the special events going on at the school, play kickball with the kids in gym every so often and show them youre a normal person like them, and not act like a dink. thatll be half the battle... if kids know the SRO personally, they would be more apt to talk to them one on one than bring in a gun and shoot the place up. there is more to an SRO than just being good at shooting guns and walking around like youre 8 feet tall....

Very few teachers I know have any interest in using, much less carrying, firearms

I'm all for more secure schools, but I'll believe it when I see it

Shortly after Columbine, my school district attempted to do metal detectors and 1 way in 1 way out schools...that was shot down (pun not intended) by parents very quickly because they didnt want their children feeling like they were in prison or being punished

Newtown had a brand new security system, the school was very secure. that wasnt the problem, and no matter how secure a school/building is, if someone wants to get into it bad enough, like a vehicle, they will. in this case, through a window the shooter shot out. you can never prevent things like this from happening, all you can do is respond to the situation and stop the agression as fast as you can. i do believe that events like this are directly related to the state of the economy. economy goes down, people lose jobs, people get divorced, people go nuts. economy is good, people are happy, people dont get divorced, people dont go nutty. just as any other crime...

That's not true. Any citizen witnessing a crime is allowed too arrest someone in all states except North Carolina.

Only in the case of a felony. And making a citizens arrest is so tricky. You can fuck it up

I don't think the economy had any effect on a mentally disturbed 20 year old shooting a bunch of children. And seeing the house he and his mother were left behind, it's purely speculation but I doubt there were economic reasons behind their divorce. I mean, people do get divorced when the economy is good lol.

Besides, the economy hadn't tanked yet when they guy shot up Virginia Tech.

Well private security in VA that is armed can arrest shoplifters as well as long as you witness it and or the retailer witnesses it, But that is an entirely off subject.

i believe the economy plays a huge part maybe not in this particular case, but you cant say that a bad economy has no effect on the amount of crime comitted.

My argument is not invalid. Why would someone who's job is to protect a school try too arrest someone for adultery?

im just saying, it would be hard to arm teachers and private security guards and put them in schools with the only goal of being intimidating towards the kids... when you could have a police officer in the school with an array of goals and tasks.

The whole point behind this discussion is that they can, not if they do or not. The fact is you could pay any tom, joe or hank too protect a school and they could arrest someone for committing a crime. You stated that they couldn't.

    You were wrong.

    Case closed.

We've had "resource officers" at our schools since I was in 6th grade...so around 96ish. Not sure about the elementary schools, because they started after I was out of elementary school, but I know they're at the middle and high schools. They're County Sheriff's deputies, and yes, they're armed.
