If every kid gets an equal voucher , and they all want to go to the best 4 out of the 10 schools available , there obviously isn't the capacity to accept 100% of the students in 40% of the classroom

So who gets in and who doesn't , and how do you choose ?

I am all for having safe and secure schools and I just don't see how hard it would be to provide office space and a parking spot for a local police officer.

local malls have it where there is a police station in the mall, why not have an extension of the police station in our local schools??

Opening this up according to free market capitalism would create chaos. If people chose private schools are schools out of their home districts it would cause entire districts to collapse and entire areas would have no schools at all. Same kind of free market bullshit that wrecked the fucking economy on '08.

There's no simple solution to this problem. I'm sure that if we could snap our fingers and make all guns disappear from the possession of anybody who might do harm with them, we'd do it.

I have a hard time believing that an armed police officer in every school in America would eliminate all school shootings. As noted, there was a cop (or guard?) at Columbine.

Still, the middle school and high school in my city have had a dedicated officer on the grounds since I went (over a decade ago). It made me feel safer as a student, and as a father of a toddler, I feel better knowing that the schools where she'll be a student has a cop on duty.

No, a cop can't be everywhere at all times, but he can be somewhere and he can be close by at all times. I would think that would be enough to deter SOMEBODY, and it would allow for a faster response to any disturbance.

But we live in the real world where wanting a cop in every school isn't enough to HAVE a cop in every school. I'm willing to bet that most communities can't afford to have a cop in every school. Unless people are willing to pay more in taxes - like a special assessment or something - to cover the extra law enforcement, it's not likely to happen.

    Anyway, that's my $0.02.

Watch how many new private schools open when your scenario happens. Then, the government schools will have to raise their level of excellence to compete for those vouchers (dollars)

    Free market forces at work.

Are you old enough to remember the crap cars Detroit was producing...until the imports started kicking their ass in quality? Then the US manufactures had to step it up to stay in the game because they no longer had a monopoly in the market...like government education currently does

Same thing with the education business. Open it to free markets and watch the quality improve.

You are for free markets and choice, right?

Every time anything happens there are a great deal of people saying "ban all guns, they're the problem" 'Ban this, ban that, this sounds scary ban it, this looks scary ban it" We are a country focused on laws that make us FEEL safe and have no concern on whether they actually do any good. And to those saying pro gun activists aren't giving ideas, we're giving the ones that would make the biggest, and most immediate differences, but no one wants to hear them. Allow more people to carry in public, both openly and concealed. Better and more mental health checks.

    Aaaah...

    The left has spoken.

All about freedom of choice when it concerns the unborn child in the womb, but no freedom for a child's education once he/she shares the oxygen with the rest of us.

    Got it

I must have missed that , I thought the proposed law was to reinstate the " assault weapon ban "

    but that's a different thread

Why not raise the quality of public education?

Why not give parents (tax payers) choices?

I'm all for it , as long as it doesn't abandon any kids in the new system's race to acheive " most vouchers received "

    neglect, mostly.
truthfully, the unfortunate events of Connecticut and the recent talks of gun control and the like is what brought light (to me) that many schools dont have "armed securtiy".

when i was in high school, all the schools in my county had them. the sheriffs deputy that was at my school was a very cool guy, and by not means was a distraction or a problem at my school. i think cody used the word "transparent" to describe the one at his school in hawaii. i agree completely. . other than the fiscal strain on the county, i see no downside to it.

Fireman are grown adults and are already trained & skilled at self defense.

Nobody can protect themselves against the 'unknown'.

    Children are defenseless.

That's a huge can of worms.

If you created a private education system based around state requirements, you'd create the problem of having wealthier districts having better schools and the poorer school districts having to make do with less and the opportunity for an equal education would disappear.

"Charter" Schools are a sort of answer to that. This is a school that parents or teachers work to establish-it effectively becomes a publicly funded private school-with a long line of kids waiting to get in. So there is some "choice" in the public system.

4 Firefighters responding to a house fire were shot today. Two were killed and two have life threatening injuries. According to the news, they were volunteers. With some exceptions, FF's are not "trained and skilled at self defense." as part of their jobs. BTW, one or two other structures suffered damage because the FD would not respond to the scene until it was secured.

And I'd like to add, when the BRT rolls up, someone needs help. A FF shouldn't have to watch his back while he's trying to care for a patient or put out a fire. Who wins in that situation?
