Hey guys- this is a great site!

I'm hoping to own a Tacoma soon.

I've had a landscaping business for the past few years and have been and been driving one tons for my daily use. I just sold my business and no longer need a big truck. Of course the first thing I looked for was a Tacoma.

To be honest, I wasn't planning on spending this much but this just seems to be a good truck for a good price.

The seller got it, leveled it, and put some Moto Metal wheels and BFG's on. A month or so later got a job change and needs to get rid of it.

2008 Tacoma. 4X4 Manual. 5600 miles. Its pretty much flawless.
    Asking $19000 firm.

I'm supposed to fly down to get it tomorrow but wanted to hear some opinions from all of you.
    Is this a good deal?

    Thanks in advance.

    Joe

Its a nice looking truck why is the guy selling it? Did you run a carfax on it? I would go over it real good and if all looks well get it.

19k seems pretty high for a regular cab manual with no options. I can't see a TRD sticker. Is it at least an SR5? You might want to take a look at Edmunds. He's asking more than retail for a brand new truck

That does seem high. Get your butt on Edmunds.com and find out what you should be paying for your area.

    Hey thanks for the responses.

I was at the dealership a few weeks ago and the base model Tacomas were about $20k. (he also added 2500 in extras) so I thought it was a good deal.
I think I am going to keep looking though.

Where does Edmunds come up with those numbers? Where could I find a dealer with those prices?

    Thanks again.

First of all, don't look at the sticker and think you can't deal with them. I will NEVER pay over invoice for any vehicle (mine sticker for $25,300, I paid $23,500 = invoice). The best thing to do is make dealers compete against each other via the internet. Send an email to the 2 or 3 closest dealers and play them against each other.

Edmunds simply uses the actual invoice price and surveys what others are paying in your zip code. From the Edmunds.com website:

Wilson is right. Play them against each other. ALL dealers have that price. they all pay the same for these things except for the destination charge. Edmunds just tells you what the invoice is. They were dead on with mine (the dealer gave me the invoice). Again, like Wilson said, you shouldn't pay more than invoice. My wife got her Altima for $300 under invoice. Unfortunately, you want to buy from a private party, so he can pretty much charge whatever he wants. He is probably trying to get what he owes.

yeah, MSRP is for suckers. MSRP on my truck was over 30k and i paid 26.5k for it new. i made the dealers compete with each other. it went on for about 2 weeks then finally one dealer looked at the quote i got from toyota of greenville and said "thats a good price, we cant match it, get it from them". I think i paid a little over invoice but not much. plus they had it broght in from antoher state

I dont know where you are located but Jim Barkley Toyota in Asheville ,NC has one http://www.jimbarkleytoyota.com/New-Inventory.aspx for sale for $18,489 brand new with air conditioning. If you look at their website they list their best selling price on the internet. Not many dealers do that anymore. I have bought 3 vehicles from them. In fact you can get an extended cab for 21,325.

Joe, please be very careful flying in with a wad of money to go see a privately owned vehicle. We had a similar situation here in Texas just recently. A fellow drove up to get a vehicle in Dallas. He had made arrangements to meet the seller. The seller turned out to be crooks waiting on him and his money he was packing. They killed him, took his vehicle/money and disappeared.

Just a warning to keep your eyes and ears open. Having a second person there would be a good idea too. You are flying in so you will not be packing most likely, they might be though.

Not trying to spook anyone or start any flame wars but nowadays it doesn't hurt to be on the watch for this sort of thing. :)

A piece of trivia: right now at this moment (1) out of every (100) American adults is IN jail or prison. That is kinda scary!

Sounds like you are trying to scare someone. I always just bring another person with you (preferable big) and only a deposit. That might be tough if you were going to fly in though. Dealers are always safer though.

And it's 1 in 99 people in jail. More than 1% of the population

Thats a legitimate concern whenever you are meeting someone for the first time and money is involved. Whenever my dad goes to sell a gun he never sells bullets with it (belive it or not people have actually been surprised that the gun is not loaded and have asked, "You're seriously not gonna throw in six rounds with this"? yeah, thats a good idea, i've never met you, i have a wad of money in my pocket, and heres a loaded gun. They think its a matter of him being cheap. oh well back on topic) and he always packs a loaded gun, and also has someone follow him in another car and makes sure they are strapped too. He also never lets them come to the house to see or buy the gun. He doesnt want someone to know we have alot of guns and know where we live and then arm them, makes sense. But anyway, he meets them in a nuetral place. if you come rolling up in 2 cars you're alot less likely to get into trouble, especially if you have two or more people packing. So anyway, what i'm saying is its always smart to cover all your bases when dealing with strangers and money, whether your buying a gun, a truck or something else. Better safe than dead.

good question. we usually meet the buy in a parking lot somewhere to actually sell the gun. selling is not illegal but the way we do it sure does look sketchy. 3 vehicles in the parking lot, a truck on either side of the buyers car. a dude with a gun, another dude with some money, then they switch. i'd probablly call for backup if i were a cop and i saw that driving by
