It's called the UNKNOWN. You can't protect yourself against the unknown.

That's not any different than you walking down the street. Someone can pretend to be jogging by you, grab your head and twist...dead. Did you know that was coming? UNKNOWN

For Gawd sake..... Everyone should build themselves a cave and crawl in it and never come out. You'll be safe down there.

Again, you show your ignorance on the subject. Or stubbornness?

    Read s-l-o-w-l-y...

    Each. Kid. Gets. One. Voucher.

The voucher represents the amount of funds in place for each kid. The parent then can choose to spend the SINGLE voucher at the school of their choice.

    There are no multiple vouchers.

    And again...
The voucher system has been tested in low income districts...and is very successful. Do some research.

Not suggesting a private only system.

And most of what you articulate is the current system. A voucher system gives those in poor districts the opportunity to choose a school in a better district. Something they currently can not do

So what's the difference between those four firefighters and the kids in your example? Each is defenseless in this case but you insist they are not.

Those four were picked off going to do a job where the risks were well understood and for which they undoubtedly spent many hours training for. In this situation, those four firefighters were just as defenseless as any child.

sure, we could have a perp walk down at the library..... There are a million reasons why an officer on site would be only a very small help( if any at all). Also I don't know any teachers who want to have a weapon on them in class, and I know bunches of teachers. They want to teach not become law enforcement officers. we going to hand out body armor as well? Who is liable when a student gets shot accidentally? Who wants that responsibility? People really don't seem to understand how schools work. It's time to treat the disease and not the symptom.

accept charter schools cherrypick the students and don't deal with special needs kids, while getting funding from the government. Not fair when they brag about the test scores and they have no special needs students to deal with.

Parents can work with teachers to create a Charter School today. There are many of them. However, they aren't necessarily better in a significant number of cases.

Let's say the state gives a voucher for $100 and everyone wants to choose school "A" because it's private, has better teachers and most students get into college. The catch is that it costs $150 to go. Do you think a poorer student still has the same opportunity with a voucher?

I happen to believe public education, at least in CA, needs an overhaul. In CA, enrollment has stayed constant for the last 10 years (at a state level) while the budget has climbed from USD$45B to USD$91B (education is between 48 and 51 percent of the annual state budget). Overall performance levels haven't improved much maybe even declined. I personally think that means it's time for accountability and reform. California's schools used to be the best in the nation but we spend far more (per student) than most states and we get nothing for that extra.

I'd love to discuss it more but this discussion isn't about education so I'll leave my comments at that.

The 'pick' needs to be better then

Some stats suggest improvement occurs in less than 20% of the schools. And almost 40% suck worse than the public schools they replaced. At best, it's a wash.

But the special needs kids are an issue for sure.

You sure seem to be whining a lot and jumping to a lot of conclusions and assumptions and offering no real suggestions yourself. No one is suggesting requiring teachers to carry, only allowing those who wish to carry. In the event of a catastrophe such as a gunman on a campus the teacher is NOT going to run out gun blazing, as they too have a sense of survival. What would happen is teachers directing students to their classroom for safety (which HAS happened in EVERY school shooting), only now if the gunman or gunmen went in the classroom looking for easy targets the teacher has an ability to successfully attempt to defend themselves and YOUR CHILDREN. Attackers will start to think twice when attacking schools because now they are unsure who has the ability to stop them (unlike currently where most states BAN guns from being on campus and the attackers know they are safe for 10-30 minutes at least)

As for teachers accidently shooting children please explain how this is going to happen? Teachers are usually mature adults who would understand the dangers and great responsibility of owning and carrying a gun around children. They are not going to be cleaning them, playing with them, and probably wont even letting people know they have them so that nobody can establish which teachers have guns. How many people have been accidentally shot by police, or security guards?

You say treat the disease. And what do you suppose the cure is? yearly, monthly, weekly, or daily mental health checks? Maybe you want foolishly attempt to confiscate every gun in the USA, you can see how that works out with a short visit to Mexico. 60,000 dead in the past 6 years because criminals have nothing to fear from the majority of citizens who obey the law and don't own guns! Making the punishments harsher for people like this makes no difference because as we've seen most kill themselves after they're done anyways. Short of implanting a chip in every person's head in the whole wide world to catch a bad guy as soon as he gets a bad idea there is no "cure" for this disease.

the day vouchers become the law...is the day thousands of new schools open up...thereby creating a more competitive market...so, that school "A" will not cost 150...it may not even cost 100.

keep in mind...new business will compete for the vouchers...competition = better market = lower cost = more choice for education.

and, btw...public schools are welcome to compete for the vouchers.

raise the bar in education with market conditions and choice.

    perfect.

    you make my point.

more vouchers at the better school...the school fills up...more new schools open up at the higher level of excellence...or the public school raises the bar to compete for the vouchers.

    simple.

I am pointing out the ridiculous nature of the argument for arming teachers. The other day trained cops killed inocent people by accident, you think a teacher is infallible? I say treat the disease meaning mentall health issue's. You think these shooters did not have mental health issue's? I think it's foolish to think a security man can protect a school. I also think it's foolish for a police station in a school.

I'm referring to being 'DEFENSELESS' as a state of maturity.

Children are defenseless because they don't know what violence is. They haven't matured enough to understand it. They can't make their own decisions and they can't provide for themselves. They can't protect themselves. PERIOD.
