To go back to the Tundra axle shafts, since I have my axles out I figured I'd post actual thicknesses. Not counting the taper right by wheel bearing, the Tundra axle shaft is 1.48" thick from the wheel bearing to the middle of the axle. It then tapers down to 1.38" all the way till about 1/2" from the splines. Then it tapers down to 1.28" thru the splines.

In contrast, the factory Tacoma axle is 1.326" closest to the bearing and tapers down to 1.28" at the splines.

So the taco shafts do taper up at the bearings.... 1.77"??? That sounds pretty high..........

Looking back at pics from my gear install... it does look like they taper up a little bit
    [IMG]
Thanks for getting those numbers, man! So it looks like a tundy axle is a hair over 1/8" wider at the bearing....... doesn't seem like a whole lot to me.... That is something though.

If you guys want a FF yota axle... there always the FJ80. It's not much wider than a taco axle and the diff is slightly offset, but it's full float, 31 spline, 9.5" ring gear, disc brakes, 3.25" housing, 1.31" shafts all the way to the carrier, available with an e-locker, and it's Toyota. Doesn't seem to be a whole lot more work than a tundra axle to swap anyway.... Is there a reason I don't see any LT taco guys running this instead of the tundra axle or ford 9"?

Not sure size of 9" shafts but they have pinion pocket bearings which may give the 9" an edge over the 9.5.

There's a very simple reason everyone goes 9".....AVAILABILITY.

You're going to have to be a forum and craigslist whore to try to find a 9.5" yota axle for a decent deal. You can get a junkyard 9" for next to nothing. I got lucky with the price I payed for my tundra axle. It wasn't a problem finding an axle, but everyone wanted $600-1200 for the entire axle.
That and the aftermarket parts and availability for the 9" are ridiculous. Thanks to nascar, you can get gear ratios literally in 1% increments.

    I'm not sure either...
 I gotcha... I was thinking junkyard all the way... lucky Pull and pay visits ftw :D

And yeah, aftermarket support is insane for the 9".... too bad it's ford. :D

You can build an entire fabricated 9" and not a single piece be from Ford ;)

Okay Jason. There could be a possibility of my dad getting a full e locker swap so then I could have his Trd sport LSD rear axle.

    So a tundra is 67" and a 2nd gen is 66" right??

I know I'd have to redo spring perches too amd brake lines..anything else??

Think it's worth it too?? It would be free..I'd still go arb at some point.

    Edit:

Never mind...locker axle fell threw :pout:

Gave up on the Detroit. I loved the thing until I had to drive in the city with it.
So I installed an ARB third, plumbed air lines, and ran wires. I got the medium duty compressor should I every decide to get an ARB for the front too.

Trust me...I was very reluctant to change it out to an ARB.
But until this thing becomes a dedicated trail truck, I don't have much choice.

Actually no. I called up ECGS and explained my situation and that I wasn't happy with the Detroit given my current situation and asked if I could "upgrade" to an ARB. They credited me the full price of the Detroit towards the ARB, I only had to pay $60 for the return shipping and the remaining cost of the ARB.
