Counting my lucky stars and thanking God after what happened today. If it weren't for my best friend Robert, I would have likely died today, on Christmas Eve. That man saved my life. Talk about a Christmas Miracle, because that man is.
Me and Robert were at his Uncle Buddy's garage to bring home the spare 454 for his Chevy dualie. We used the engine hoist to put the engine on our home-made dolly, strapped it down, and proceeded to tow it to the trailer. Robert was pulling it up the trailer ramp and I was behind it, pushing it. Damn thing broke its straps on the ramp incline and headed my way. Flipped right on top of me. I was sandwiched between it and the concrete driveway with my hand up by my head, face in the concrete. I was pinned under it from about halfway down my back to my head. (I'm a little guy.) Don't think I've ever been in so much pain, and I've hurt myself more times than I can count. But Robert, he runs down the ramp, and with strength I didn't figure he had, pushed that thing off top of me. Robert's all over me, holding my head in his lap and trying to stop the bleeding from the back of my head, where I reckon something on the engine got me. Soaked it all up in his shirt. I lay there for a couple minutes, hardly knowing what was going on other than my head, wrist, and back were on fire. Felt the blood all warm all over me, too. Little bit I could think, I thought I was gonna die.
I didn't, obviously, cos I'm sitting here typing this. After about fifteen minutes, so Robert says, I sat up and asked for a cigarette. He lit me up and continued holding his shirt to my head. It stopped bleeding for the time being shortly after, and he sorta tested me for the known signs of a concussion. Figured I was okay. Asked me if I wanted to go to the hospital, and I told him hell no. It's wasn't bad enough, I said. He took me home and patched me up, and I sat on his couch for a while and he's kept an eye on me.
The injuries aren't too bad now- it's been about nine or ten hours since the incident. Head is still throbbing, of course, and I've got a roughly inch and a half long gash on the back of my head, with several other minor lacerations. My shoulder and back feel like they are constantly on fire, because apparently the damn thing sort of slid down my back, giving me what looks like some bad road rash. My wrist isn't broken, cos I can move it and it's not bad swollen, but I get pain every time I put pressure on it or don't hold it perfectly straight. All in all, I got out with minor injuries, considering. I got lucky it DIDN'T kill me.
I couldn't have been any luckier that he flipped that damn thing off of my head, let me tell you. He saved my life. I wouldn't be typing this message right now if he hadn't done what he did. He did a real sort of Christmas Miracle.
    Thanks, Robert.

Daaaang, man. Glad you're alright! Should still get checked out at the hospital, though, at least for the head gash.

Thank goodness you are able to still walk after that..but seriously do what was suggested and at least get your head checked out. I got hit in the skull about 9 years ago and the pain went away after an hour or so but I had a serious concussion..couldn't drive or look at my computer at work 2 days later. Don't play games with that, you could have lasting effects otherwise.

Wrist isn't too bad. Full function, looks almost normal at this point. Head still hurts, but I haven't had anything funny happen- I remember everything, motor skills are fine, vision and hearing are no worse than they already were, and I have my appetite back, which leads me to think that there is no concussion. But I'm gonna try and head up to the Now Care center as soon as I can. Robert's gonna take me up there, because he doesn't want me driving until we know I'm good. The head wound opened up twice last night. Bled a good bit the first time, and the second time was hardly anything. Got it wrapped up just in case it wants to bleed again. I could hardly sleep last night- I stayed up until 6 this morning, because I had to do my paper route (Robert helped me) but when I got home, I was waking up every few minutes until I gave up trying to sleep. I think at this point, my back/shoulder where I have the road-rash looking stuff hurts the most.

I feel damn lucky that things didn't end up differently. I'm glad Robert has some crazy skinny man strength, that's for sure.

Hang in there buddy and please keep us updated.

Movement doesn't mean it's not broken and bleeding within reason is not always bad as it can have certain benefits with open injuries.

Visiting the doctor will not hurt a thing.

Glad you are ok man! Being in the medical feild, I would suggest going to get checked out. My buddy ran a FULL marathon on a fractured foot, which he did not know at the time.

Better be safe and not find anything than to find something that could of been prevented years from now

But glad you are! And Merry Christmas!

Oh, don't temp faith again, and make sure to get a tetanus shot (most important) if you have not had one in last 10 years.

Merry Christmas and you got the best gift you can get ... "your life". ... :D

Back from the Doc, who said I did indeed suffer a grade 2 concussion. I thought I was doing good yesterday, but several symptoms made themselves known today- dizziness, poor balance, sluggishness, the headache that still won't go away, nausea, and blurred vision. Did an MRI (I HATE THOSE) and the initial results were good. No bleeding. I'll have to wait a day or two to get the full results. This has certainly proven to be an eventful Christmas, I'll tell ya that. :notsure:

I don't remember if I ever had a tetanus shot. If they did them in school, then I probably did have one years ago, but I guess that wouldn't be current enough.
I have learned not to use stupid tie-down straps to hold an engine on a ragged-ass wooden dolly, that's for sure. And not to push from behind it. :p

Mmm, I looked it up online. Fully dressed, about 700 pounds. I'm still trying to figure out why I'm not dead. Talk about seeing the light, man- that was scary as hell! I think I also got lucky that it was still partly (barely) on the dolly when it was on top of me- that probably saved my ass. And the fact that it was already so low to the ground. I was almost level with the ground when I was pushing it- when it fell on me, I was fully stretched, trying to get the longest stride on a push, so my head and back were about level with the top of the dolly that it was sitting on. That's why it laid me flat out, because I was already so low to the ground and stretched out.

Much thanks- I'm sure as hell glad myself. Now I have to take a week (minimum) off of work to recuperate, but I'm glad it wasn't worse, cos I could be out for longer- or be dead. Definitely glad it wasn't the latter.
