Newspaper Publishes Names

(NEW YORK ) -- A newspaper in New York has received a wave of criticism from its readers after publishing the names and addresses of all of the individuals with handgun or pistol permits in its coverage area.

Most likely will fall under some public record type deal. Very dumb, I say. But, no different than the paper or those "hard times" type mags that post all the arrests in a given area every week.
IF, and that's a huge f'n IF, criminals could/did read the paper it could keep your house/dwelling off of there' "hit" list. Ha, like crooks are reading the paper....

 

Now criminals know which houses are good victims for home invasions - ones not on the list.

 

Or, they now know which residences have weapons that can be stolen.

Who says the criminals don't do the same ?

 

If so, who will they (criminals) "most" likely target? And I'll wager, home invaders don't read the daily newspaper.

 

They can.
It's a matter of public record.

Why do you think we are so opposed to even "common sense gun laws" such as registration, permits, etc....?
Even concealed carry permit information is available under FoIA.

We aren't trying to conceal criminal activity... we want to protect ourselves from criminal activity, same as police officers and court employees can opt to have their vehicle registration information redacted from DMV searches.

Responsible journalism has been gone for quite some time, now it's mostly sensationalism.

 

The Commercial Appeal, the main paper in Memphis, keeps a public database available for people to see who has a permit in Tennessee. The CA is very liberal, and they wear out any story related to firearms, gay marriage, or general Politics.
They've been posting multiple gun related stories every day since Newtown. I thought the media was supposed to report the news, not create it.
They have a lot of other annoying databases as well. You can search a police officer's name and get their salary.

Then what is the point of saying it's public record?? I see where you said the criminals could do it too, but we are talking about a newspaper doing it...Certainly seemed to be justifying the papers actions by saying any could do it.

That way people can break into the gun owners home maybe find a gun use it in a crime and the left wing nut jobs win. They put that on the news and scream for gun control.

 

Wrong gypsies read the papers all the time looking just for this type of thing. Death notice, weddings, all kinds of openings.

 

Don't see my gypsies down my way, but point taken. I keep most of mine locked away in the safe.
