I have an 8 year old Toshiba 57 inch rear projection TV and the convergence chips have gone bad. This is the only problem I have had with this set. The cost to fix it is $500. Should I bite the bullit and buy a 52" LCD or fix this one

there's nothing that says your old TV won't break down in a couple months. I would buy a new one.

You're also going to be able to pick up over the air high definition TV for free if you get a new TV.

Go with new. LCD just looks way better than a rear projection any day, and the prices have come down so much in recent years. You could probably pick up a 60 inch for around 1500, and you don't have to worry about something else failing on it like you will with the older tv.

Buy a new one......prices are soooo damn cheap now-a-days on big screens.

Try to sell your old one - if you can. Obviously, you gotta tell what's wrong with it. Maybe you'll get lucky and someone out there will want it.

There's a guy I work with who had a Hitachi (I think). One of the original big screen TV's. I can't remember exactly, but he tried to get it fixed and it would've cost $800 and WAY too much time sitting at the shop to get it fixed (long story). So - the guy put the TV in his back yard and set it on fire!!

    Now that's hilarious!!

My Dad has a similar Hitachi that is out of commision. One of the originals...He bought a new TV.

When my old WS projection went out I shot the shit out of it & then went out the next day & bought a LCD. Do the flat screen you'll never regret it!

Costco has GREAT prices on LCD & plasmas. Not a bad selection either.

HD is wonderful. Buy a new set. You can probably still get a large DLP or LCD projection box for under $1k assuming you can live with the size.

Dont know if I would agree with you there. I have a 65" Hitachi Ultravision Digital rear projection HD tv (Pro series...hard screen) and it is way clearer and much brighter than most LCDs I see. Also rear projection dont suffer from refresh rates and ghosting issues of LCDs ....just put a PS3 HD game on cheap LCDs at 60 frames a second and see what happens.
That being said there are some nice LCDs but the good ones cost alot still. And 60+ inches is where big screens start anything less is good for the bathroom or a computer monitor!
