    Hello! All,
    Happy Holidays!
I am a proud owner of a 2013 Tacoma with double cap and automatic transmission. When I am driving on an icy winter highway. Will I damage the truck by shifting to 4 wheel drive? What is the safest way to engage or disengage 4X4 during high speed? Thanks

If there is snow over the pavement you will not damage the 4WD system as there will be adequate slippage

Take your foot off the accelerator when switching in and out of 4WD , this will ease the transition

And unless you are trying to get a little sideways, I'd say leave it in 4wd in the snow. Shouldn't damage anything engaging at speed (under 60mph, won't even allow you any faster than that) just ease off the gas and you'll hear/ feel it engage as well as the flashing light on the dash going solid.

Good luck, drive safe, and welcome

can you drive at highway speeds (100 km/h) with 4wd high?

does it do any damage to the system etc?

I know on the 2nd Gens, Toyota has the recommended maximum speeds for 4WD HI & LO...

Drove the Alaska Highway with the truck in 4HI going 90/100 Km for hours. No problems whatsoever, although maybe a Toyota guru will chime in and say otherwise.

Save 4LO for when you're off pavement.

good advice: try not to change modes while in a tight corner or
an intersection corner, do it on a straight section. otherwise it may bind a bit

Instead of asking here, the answers are in a little book inside the truck. Too lazy to read that? No sympathy.

maybe he's at his job with no access to his owners manual. he did post in the new member section, i don't see anything wrong with him asking what he asked.

How about instead of posting you just go to another thread. Saves us all the hassle of reading your bullshit.

    lol "kids". you're funny.
he came to a tacoma forum and asked an appropriate question for this part of the forum.
he may not have his manual.
he may be trolling you. got you to waste your manual reading time to post about it.
he may have time to kill at work.

oh to add to this, though my truck is a 2002 i've engaged and disengaged 4wd at highway speeds no problem.

He has a point, these topics have been beaten to death. :deadhorse:

They're also adequately covered in the manual and the little card on the visor.

Not to be a dick, but like I said they've been beaten to death and hashed out here over and over. So that might yield some real world experience if the directions on the card or in the manual weren't clear. I don't really care, I'd have just ignored this thread all together had I not seen yours and Jamie's posts. My point in posting -- He does have a point. I think his post was a bit harsh but yours in turn was as well. So I felt I'd point that out.
