    Nuff said.......Thanks.
This is definitely a discussion with 2 sides. Its like covering a leaky pipe with a tee shirt, then again when it leaks again and so on and so on.
Why have kids go to school in the first place?
Why let them leave their house?
Its ridiculous to have school when its main purpose is to have children learn how to behave, cooperate in a group setting and solve problems as a team in order to create a better society but then say this here guy is gonna shoot the first threatening person who walks through those doors.
How is a child supposed to learn when your basically telling them there is an easier way to solve a bigger picture.
Obviously a 6 year old wont see it this way. Though if it takes one word to manipulate a brain enough to make someone mentally unstable than wouldnt it be just as much a threat allowing armed guards or teachers access to guns on school grounds.
There is so many ways to look at an issue like this that a reasonable answer is not just around a corner.
As for the " there is a reason these people do not enter a police station and do this" comment, I believe this statement to be false. There are people who do this exact such thing and these people are usually the trusted ones that work there.
So in this case who can you trust.

Excellent support for why you should have a gun on you at all times. Imagine what would have happened were those officers unarmed. Instead he is dead and the laws in place to prevent him from owning a firearm were of no help to anybody.

If you can own and carry a firearm legally you should do so because quite frankly the folks who cant own a firearm legally carry anyways. When its good guys vs. bad guys your odds of prevailing are significantly enhanced by having a firearm on your person which you are trained in using.

If you are against firearms, when you call the police, make sure you request that they come unarmed we dont want any double standards around here.

That was posted in reference to this

As a superintendent of a large teacher armed school distict in Texas said: "there is a good reason these people do not attack police stations".

    Use it as you wish

Would anyone here be willing to pay a additional tax on ammo or guns to cover the cost of the security?

The statement is true as a generalization.

And generalizations are just that... there are no absolutes. People GENERALLY don't try to rob gun stores, but it does happen.

It would be interesting to see the data behind the conclusions drawn.

CCW holders understand the responsibility and will tend to make attempts to deescalate potentially volatile situations.

So where does the data come from?

Two gang members are in a shootout, that counts toward "person carrying a gun was shot"

Without providing circumstantial statistics, the conclusions in the article are meaningless.

Another great example of why this thread fails. If I scour the net I can find "an article" to support any opinion I want, much the same way the folks who conduct studies often conduct them with the outcome they want in mind. First let me say this article alludes to a study which isn't even posted, and who is the guy who conducted it and how did he conduct it?

Let me tell you what I think. I think this study, if it exists actually reflects criminals who have died while carrying guns. That's what I would bet a paycheck on. But they dont tell you that in the "article" they give you a shock an awe title and let you draw the conclusion they hope you will draw.

If you want to know something dont go find an article and post that as some type of factual evidence. Find the actual study, then once you do, analyze the study, dig into a bit and peel it apart. Google is not always your friend.

Edit: Rich beat me too it.

Kind of:):):) I own guns and am a strong believer in the right to bear arms but statistics don't lie, I know the media distorts facts but there must be some truth behind the numbers. One thing I do know is past school shootings have had armed guards and the results were still very similar. Also the $$ to have a armed guard in schools would need to be funded somehow.

That is exactly true. I put it up because it has as much truth as your statement about having guns and being more safe. I am by no means against the use of guns for security however this is not the issue. The issue is placing more fire arms, more people with access to those fire arms and ammunition closer to the children.
Also, because of the type of situation and random acts involved, it may help to have arms on one occasion and may cause more hurt on another.
Its for this reason we have a governed force (police) for such situations.

Don't we think the Dept of Homeland Security is a big enough umbrella? I feel that you make good points, however, I feel as though you are heading in the wrong direction. I was in the military and guarded many structure including the airports which is now federally controlled with personnel who grope and radiate you before you can fly. I feel that if we federalize as you say the school system and security than we be doing the same thing down the road as Hitler did with the jews. First just desensitize the people to searches and then we can get away with what ever we want through the fear of the boogieman.

....the best approach to discussing this issue is to start w/ the salient points and work backwards from there:

    1) when seconds count, the police are only "minutes" away...
    2) the best response to quell a violent attack is to counter w/ force... has been that way for millenia
    3) large buildings filled w/ defenseless persons = cornered cats = big time target to the sociopaths and terrorists...
    4) consolidate 1, 2, and 3, ...and the starting point should become apparent ;)
