Boot Camp Myth for the AR family of firearms. If you get a malf it's most likely a bad mag regardless.

As for the FAL? No clue as I never owned one.

Bad mags cause most malfs but if you have the ability to use a bipod it is much better than using a 30rd magazine. Myth or not it changes the geometry.

Not the geometry so much as if you have a worn mag or magazine catch, you can exacerbate an overinsertion.

If your gear is GTG, there's no problem. If you have wore out crap, you can cause a FTF/FTB.

Who fights from the prone anymore?? The majority of the time you'll have too much crap on and if not then you'll still have to raise up to see over vegetation. :p

What does that mean "changes the geometry"? And what does it matter?

Resting good mags in a good gun on the deck is a non-issue in the AR-pattern carbine or rifle. If it causes issues in someone's sample of one, they need to evaluate what the problem is before it gets worse and cause issues in all positions.

Changes the feed angle from the rounds coming from the magazine, even if it is slight it still changes it. Same reason why people argue against using the magazine as a VFG and using a magwell grip. On top of all that most guys here aren't in a position where using a mag for a bipod is really necessary since most guys here shoot paper, including myself. Hey if it works for you that is fine. Just no need in it if you can afford to put a bipod on your rifle.

That's the geometry we're talking about? I've been wondering for years what the hell nonsense people were talking about.

Bipods change POI from offhand to prone more than resting the magazine does. I guess if all we're talking about is sitting at a bench at the static range chasing groups and buying widgets when the groups aren't the size we think they should be, then ok. I'd rather fucking hang myself than sit and shoot like that after I started shooting action matches and taking classes years ago.

There all kinds of ways to shoot paper. I largely shoot paper and steel, and have more than once found occasion to do so from the prone.

There are way better reasons not to grab the magwell than some perceived DI/DS/Internet nonsense about "geometry".

Again, if resting the magazine on the deck causes malfunctions in your AR, something is wrong with your AR, or your magazines, and you should sort out what that thing is because its only a matter of time before it starts affecting the gun all the time.

Using a mag as a bipod has never bothered my guns because I just don't do it. Never had the need to. I was just passing on the info passed on to me. I also have never had a bipod change POI from standing to prone either so I guess based on your logic its never happened since it hasn't happened to me.
