if you are to put weight, it should always be over the axles.....but its not needed with good tires.

With my tires and no 4wd...I had to. Put another axle in the back, along with a little bit of wood and a heavy chunk of steel. Makes a big difference in accel from lights and hills. If I can find more weight I'll put it in.

I use the shurtrax as well. Freezes solid, can still use the bed for everything and it won't turn into a projectile in case of an accident. Works great in the sand as well as snow and ice. The shurtrax and a good set of all terrains make all of the difference on ice and snow. I lived in Alaska when I first got my shurtax and never had a problem commuting 100 miles a day on the frozen highways.

50 gallons of water seems like enough weight, but that must severly affect mpg. just put the armor on the truck and it will add the weight and "truckness" of it :)

I had a tonneau on my double cab and never had an issue in the winter time. Now with my AC and no tonneau I wish I had it. I'll have a tonneau for next winter.

I have the 2005 Prerunner 2WD double cab. I run with a tonneau on the truck all year and in the winter i add four 60lb sand socks in the back over the axle. it does help especially with the RWD. Currently running Dunlop Radial Rover RVXT's and they've been great. this is their 4th winter with approx. 54,000 kms

Weight will help you. You have a rear wheel drive vehicle, the worst for the snow/ice because you're pushing the weight of the vehicle instead of pulling it with the front wheels so it wants to whip the tail around, and on top of that the rear of your truck is very light. The traction of your brand new tires won't do much if they're barely pushing against the road on the two (or one) that are moving. Add weight.

Here is what I'm doing for the winter. It's easy enough to remove and setup quickly enough, so I'll take it out if I know we won't have snow for a little bit.

6 50 pound Pea gravel bags. Picked up at Westlakes, for $5 a bag or something a month ago. The reason I picked Pea Gravel was it was the strongest bag (wouldn't split once frozen). Sand bags just shred it seems..
The wood is to keep the bags off the bed, for less chance of water freezing onto the bags.

Bit of traction gain, and they are not directly on the axle.. But it helps.

Hell No. They dig out the sides of the roads here. About 3 to 4 feet deep. I like to keep my head.

I'm envious, about the only thing I like about winter is pushing snow. Hell I even like to shovel the stuff. No truck though just an open station Kubota 2550GST with loader and blade. Do the neighbors and the 1/4 mile dead end we live on 'cause it might be days before the county gets to it. Full face MC helmets do a very good job of keeping the head warm.

    happy snow plowing

    Jim
