But is there a site for....."Well I did what it said but it still isn't working" ? That'll be where most folks will be wasting their life away, lol. BTW, the majority of the population doesn't know how to follow instructions so a site to help with that would help a lot.

Thats how I did mine. Bought a case and an unpopulated board then went from there.

 

PC's are really easy to build, most people are scared thinking about it but its sooooo simple. Theres a couple tricks to master, sure... but overall one can be built in a little over an hour, depending on OS load times.

 

I just bought a new PC. I got a Lenovo tower with a quad core Pentium, 8 Gigs of Ram, 600 Gig HD, and a smokin' video card. Anyway, I got it from UPS, plugged it in and it gave me the blue screen of death and failed to startup.

After fiddling around with it for 2 days, it turned out that the video card had somehow wiggled just loose enough during shipping to not be fully connected. Can you believe that? Brand new PC too!

I used to ALWAYS build my own PC's & PC's for others. Desktops are so cheap now nobody asks me to build them and all I use are laptops now.


If I had a scanner I'd post my masterpiece. (it was before we got a digital camera 9yrs ago LOL)

Overclocked Athlon 1.7Ghz to 2.2Ghz (WOO HOO) Overclocked Radeon video card, 8 fans, neon, plexiglass window, the round IDE & floppy cables, lighted power supply and a chick in lingerie on the side!

It played Half-Life & Quake 2 like a bat outta hell!

 

is there a site like this for car engines? id like to learn more about those too

I just built my first PC. I researched the holy hell out of it and was still extremely intimidated while doing it. Looking back now it was relatively easy and I don't think I'll ever purchase another pre-built PC again.

My build:
Case - Cosmos S. Dorked out and got it powdercoated. Looks neat though.
CPU - Intel i7 920
MOBO - DFI Lan Party X58 T3eH8
GPU - GeForce 285
PSU - Corsair HX1000
RAM - 6GB OCZ platinum RAM
HDD - Velociraptor 300GB
OS - Vista 64 (I like it better than I thought I would)
Fan Controller - Has blue 6 blue LED knobs. Can't remember the name.
6 case fans - 4 with blue LED. Straight dorkin it but I think I'm cool.

 

Yeah, I've built a few PC's in my day, and it isn't always as simple as plug it all in, turn it on, load the OS, and you're good to go.

The HD on the last computer that I built crapped out after 6 or 7 years... The computer was still adequate for basic computing, and it only cost me about $300 to build, so I told my friend if he bought a new HD for it, I'd give it to him... It's still kicking. I researched building a new one for myself at the time, and wound up buying a refurbished Dell XPS desktop for $400, because it would have cost me just as much to build one myself with the same specs... It had a Core 2 Duo processor, 2x500GB HD in a Raid 0, 2GB of RAM, tuner card, and a crappy 'silent' NVIDIA video card without a fan, which burned up pretty quickly. I swapped out the video with a 9800GTX that I got for $100 and it's been great.

 

Not sure that I would build another again. It depends I suppose. I don't use desktops at all anymore (Except for Servers) and DIY laptops suck. It's kind of fun, but the geekiness wears off fast.
