You can put synthetic in at the first oil change. Your engine is mostly, if not completely broke in when you bought it. I put Mobil 1 in at 2800 miles. The truck was 8 months old at the time. Now I change it every six months. JMO.

I use to put Mobil1 synthetic in my other cars, always liked it but the dealer tells me I can't use any other oil but theirs in my new truck. It's kind of weird because I saw some Mobil1 in another Toyota dealer. It's all crap anyways. Warrantywise I'm gonna have to stick with theirs! MotherF$?@ it! :infantry:

    Google this: "Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act"

Not only can you use your favorite brand of oil, but you can do the work yourself, as long as you use oil with the viscosity recommended in the owner manual and you keep the receipts for the oil/filter with a maint' log.

    Hey Bud!
I dealt with my dealer before I bought my truck that I would be able to do my own maintenance. They said I could as long as I keep a log book, take all my stuff at their place so it would be genuine Toyota merchandise, and save all my receipts.
I check the "Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act", but I'm canadian. This is an american act and therefore is non-applicable to my situation.(thanks anyway for the information!:D). I should be able to find a similar thing for Canadians.:anonymous:

Nope, havent done the tranny and diff in either the 4 Runner or Taco yet, they dont have enough miles on them. I did run them in the Sierra that I traded in on the taco and in my 72 Camaro. Glad you mentioned this, I hadnt even looked at it yet but was getting close, the 4 Runner is coming up on 25K and I was going to have it drained and replaced with Amsoil. That's a bummer that they dont make a compatable weight, I really do like their stuff a lot.

Whichever one is on sale for the best price. Usually ends up being M1. They had a nice sale at costco, $10 off the case price, so like $4/quart. And Autozone had the M1 filters on sale for $10 each. Did the truck today, doing the wife's car tomorrow.

I used to get my panty's in a wad about the best of the best oil. Then I realized that they are all more than good enough. Just don't run dirty oil. Now, if I were an OTR trucker, and was putting 1,000,000 miles on my truck, I might care a little more.

I get a kick out of all the people that spend so much time worrying about engine oil. Have you ever known a single person to have an engine failure that was due to syn vs non-synth vs whatever brand of either oil??? I highly doubt it.

I just switched the Taco to Amsoil 5-30 and will do the Prius next. However, I saw that Amsoil has a 0-20 oil on their web site that they say can be used as a replacement for the 5-30 and that it their most fuel efficient oil. I read it to say that they are actually recommending it instead of the 5-30 - even their own 5-30.

Anyone have any thoughts, comments, or especially knowledge, about this oil? I was going to try it and see what difference it may make in the mileage.

Also, someone had previously said that the Amsoil auto tranny oil doesn't meet Toyota spec - their web site says that it does meet it. Dunno, just passing along information.

    Thanks,Rick

Regarding the oil it would be best if you called the Tech line at AMSOIL and asked your question. I know according to a TSB from Toyota that they accept and recommend "Toyota" 5W-20 for the V6 (06+) but it didn't appear the "Toyota" 0W-20 was acceptible for the V6. There are probably specs that Toyota uses to authorize compatibilty, I just don't have the TSB in front of me to reference.
I was the one that said that. Update though. I found out this weekend while surfing the AMSOIL site that they now do have a trans fluid that meets the Toyota WS specs. Regular AMSOIL auto trans fluid is called "ATF", where this newer one is called "ATL"
A fuel efficient automatic transmission fluid recommended for GM, Ford and Toyota transmissions where lighter viscosity oil is required. Provides the same excellent protection and performance as AMSOIL ATF. Recommended for vehicles requiring GM DEXRON® VI, Ford MERCON® LV and SP, and Toyota WS fluid specifications.

I've used Amsoil for about 10 years now. We've always had a garage that has carried it. It's nice now because our Car Quest carries it as well so no more "dealer network" garbage.

Always like their oil, but hated their little "Amway-esque" marketing.

So I called Amsoil and the tech guy said it's o.k. to use the 0-30 in both the Prius and the Taco V6 -apparently not the 0-20 as I had assumed. How much of a benefit is gained form 0-30 vs 5-30 is questionable in my mind but I may still try it. It's not like you change the oil every weekend and my truck leads a pretty easy life.

Thanks for the info on the tranny fluid - I'll work on getting that changed. Are there any posts on changing the trans fluid - I assume (again) that you can't (easily) drain the torque converter and so that would just leave - drain and refill, right?

Amsoil FTW! Nothing like one oil change a year or every 25k miles. :D

Only under ideal conditions. My Oil Analysis has shown using their 5W-30 that every 12,000 is the safe bet for the V6. 95% of my driving is on the highway.

That's true. I never take it even close to 25k but more like 10k, but I use it for bragging rights. :D

I've been using Amsoil oil and filters for years in my bikes and my last truck. I just put a fill of synthetic 5w-30 oil and a filter in the Tacoma. The oil and filter are good for 25k miles. I drive about 12k a year and change it once every year.
