    I would buy one, too.

Diesel is more expensive, but the gas mileage more than makes up for it. The turbo diesel jetta gets over 50mpg. The gas car is in the 20's like everything else.

Not all diesels, Affected vehicles include on-road heavy-duty diesel fueled vehicles with a GVWR greater than 14,000 lbs. Out-of-state trucks and buses that operate in California are also subject to the regulation, which aims to help the state’s air districts meet federal air-quality standards.

It doesn't apply to any vehicle under 14000 GVWR. Even on this vehicle, it wouldn't apply. California law specifically singles out pickups as a different class of vehicle than the legal term used for "truck".

It costs less to make. That's true, but they make less of it so the market pays more. Scarcity drives up the price.

ahh, but because gasoline is made from diesel, the diesel is there anyways.

Well, actually it doesn't come from diesel. Gasoline is a by product of refining crude, as is diesel. Other things that come out of crude include natural gas, engine oil, gear oil, grease, and tar/asphalt. It's a balancing act.

Plus, according to this article, our refineries are primarily geared toward the production of gasoline, not diesel. They say it's an expensive infrastructure cost to remedy that.

your forgetting all the refining that has to be done to make the diesel that passes the low sulfur content required...this is the reason that diesel is more expensive.

i heard many reasons why it is more expensive, but now i work for a company that supports oil refineries, and the above comes from the head of the reliability engineering department.

    Fair enough.

Imagine A TWIN turbo diesel taco, with propane and methanol injection as well as a performance chip and straight pipes.

    ... Hello 10 second truck!!

I agree, we all want it. But its not happening. The cost involved to build an emissions compliant north american diesel for the current Tacoma would not work in the markets favor. It would be a $5000-7500 option over the V6 Tacoma for sure! I would love it but its not happening anytime soon.

Is there an diesel engine that can be swapped into the taco on the market right now?

I believe they also (here in Canada, anyway) tax diesel more than gasoline since it's traditionally a "dirty" fuel.... If the really want the TDI's and other clean diesels to catch on, they're going to have to lower the taxes on diesel.

I WANT one! I'd be buying one for sure, and then chip/tune it with an intake, exhaust, etc. It'd be a beast.
Maybe a 4BT cummins? I know they swap those into the 80 series Land Cruisers and other smaller vehicles. Even seen a Ford Ranger with one in it.
