non-TRD vs TRD forum ownership stats

2012 Tacoma sr5 v6 4x4. Basically the only thing extra the trd had was the rear locker, which would have been nice. The sr5 had the transmission cooler in the auto, upgraded alternator, skid plates

the transmission cooler & upgraded alternator are part of the towing package...not the SR5 or auto trans.

and SR5 includes fog lights.

 

TRD here but wow i really didnt thing the poll would be so lopp sided

 

so i bought my 2010 TRD off road used, the original owner did not do any aftermarket work on it, but it has these TRD graphics on the lower section of the door panels and no bed side decals.... has anyone ever seen this before? i sure haven't, and i cant figure out why mine has this style decal

Sr5 which in Canada includes the towing package but not fog lights. Would have been nice!

 

the fogs would be easier to add than the towing package.

 

2005 DCLB TRD Sport W/ tow package, 8 years 135,000 miles and still glad I paid a little extra for the TRD.

2013 SR5 4x4 here!

It seems like the gap between TRD and SR5 narrowed a bit in the 2012 and 2013 models. Small stuff, but things that in the past would have made me upgrade to the TRD for them. Alloy wheels, touch screen, backup cam...etc.

1. Wanted standard TRAC as I'm in MN and spend most my time in 4x4 in snow. Didn't need A-TRAC for low range crawling, but still wanted an extra traction aid for deep snow that works in both 4LO and 4HI
2. Backup cam comes on the SR5
3. Touchscreen radio is available in SR5
4. Wanted a trailering package, and there is no difference between models
5. SR5 Spring rate for payload. I liked how the Sport drove with the same springs, but didn't really want bigger wheels and the scoop.
6. SR5 seats weren't quite as good as the TRD's, but a vast improvement over previous years. Difference was negligible.
7. Fogs came standard on my SR5
8. Knew I would upgrade either of the standard sets of tires after hearing the poor reviews.
9. I can add lockers later, and DAC and HAC are far beyond my needs.
10. Could get the 16" alloys in SR5 without paying the premium for the O/R.

The Bilsteins and the 110v plugin were the two things I would have liked that come on the TRD's, but an inverter and 5100's didn't add up to the TRD for me!

I definitely think the TRD is worth it if you need A-TRAC, HAC, DAC, Lockers, etc. Lots of good gear on these trucks if you're a hardcore wheeler.

 

2012 SR5 4X4 extra value pack, ya it does not have the diff lock or the HAC, but i have everything i need and nothing i dont, plus it looks just as sexy....love my truck!

 

Same truck I purchased. The SR5 4x4 extra value pack + tow package is everything I needed. Didn't want to pay for options I wouldn't use.

The issue with getting JBL and Leather is you have VERY limited options if you stick with Toyota. If you go to the aftermarket, there are loads of different ways to tailor it to you.

ya it is a pain in the ass now a days where everything comes in a package, miss the good ol days where you hand picked the options you wanted.....

 

I agree, but with the truck coming with so many basics, and a lack of a need for most of the other stuff, I was thrilled to have the option to get the SR5 value package.

I wanted the TRAC, and not A-TRAC, etc, for traction in deeper snow in 4hi vs 4lo and crawling on rock...among other things. If they had made A-TRAC a standard feature it would have worked against me in my quest to have a traction assist that operated in 4HI.

I do; however, think that there is serious money to be made in Toyota coming to the forums and taking notes on what owners commonly upgrade. They could then put these into a single small package that could be factory upgraded. For instance, it could look like this:

Driver's package: Defrost Mirrors W/ turn signals, locking tailgate, ambient interior lighting, form fitted floor mats, heated driver/pass. seats.

I also wish we could upgrade our TPMS system to use a switch to alternate between different sets of 5 sensors, but oh well. A guy can dream.

 

On another note: Most of these changes will probably occur when they release the updated Tacoma in a couple of years.
