    The "three step rule" was a term coined in a court of law by some judge or attorney trying to explain the gun laws to a jury or the general public. It is not a law. Try to explain what a three step rule entails? OK reach, grab, brandish, fire...oh wait that's 4. OK reach, open, brandish, fire:notsure:OK...reach, open, grab, brandish, fire...:quickdraw:. The law states "securely encased" Has to be in closed, secure location. This does not mean in a glove box of some shit kicker truck with a f'd up glove box that is held up with a zip tie and a pinch of skoal...Or a center console arm rest that can't close cause the gun is sticking out of it. (gave a dude 5 years for that cause he thought that his arm holding it down was good enough) The law does not state anywhere about a three step process. It's just an easy way for some people to describe how to conceal your gun and be "legal". To me the law states at least 4 steps but it's all how a person can interpret the law....everyone has their own version. So, that's why they say securely encased. If you have a permit do as you wish. Also, If you have your gun in a holster under the seat like in Jon's link....has to have a snap around the hammer or back!!!! has to be securely encased!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Hopefully I don't need to get Jim outta jail..

    Thank you for clearing it up.

    Now I do have a question about traffic stops. Should a person notify the officer that a firearm is in the vehicle in a traffic stop or only when asked?

    I ask this since I was actually stopped this morning after taking my wife to work. I didnt have a firearm in the car, but it would be nice to know.

    Not required but I do. I see it as a safety thing for myself and the officer. By me telling them they hopefully see me as a law abiding citizen that isn't up to no good.
