On the FJ forum there is a thread about mpg dropping and thermostats that the thermostats weren't opening all the way and the water wasn't heating up to specs causing a drop in mpg, I traded my FJ off for my Tacoma and never tested the theory out but others said it brought their mpg back up after replacing the thermostat.

100 mile commute daily here. Highway and rural hills combined. I am getting 20/21 mpg per tank in my 2013 v-6 auto trd 4x4. Up to 2400 miles now.

If the thermostat opens too much it won't heat up to spec.

    Or doesn't fully close.

Rather than maintaining 160 or 180 instead of 200, if it's not fully closing, in extremely cold weather, at idle it's just going to continue to drop.
Somewhere below 180, the ECU goes into open loop "warm up mode" and flushes fuel like an Kohler.

I got 14.9mpg (my first tank) that's on 10% ethanol and 87 octane (I assume, dealer filled it but, that's what they likely used around here). My truck is brand new, had 165 or so miles on it when I got it, 437 (IIRC) now. I expect mileage will increase as the engine breaks in and as the novelty of the 6 speed manual wears off. (have been driving in a spirited manner rather than an economical one) I have a 4x4, V-6, 6 speed, access cab, SR5.

87 octane is fine. The V6 might produce a bit more power on 91 as the ECU will compensate, but it's not enough to make a difference that'll save the added cost.

10% ethanol is not helping... but my suspicion is that the dealer didn't fully top off the tank.

Cleaned my filthy TRD intake cone filter and noticed 3-4mpg gain on my scan gauge...recent avg is 16-18mpg with ~300 lbs of misc weight.

Looking forward to the next fill up to see how much a dirty filter was beating me up.

interesting read, I think <<The simulated clogged filter significantly affected vehicle performance, increasing the time to accelerate
from 20 to 80 mph by 0.6 to 1.7 seconds on the three vehicles.>>

coupled with the constant change on driving up/down hills, and aerodynamics could have caused a greater impact on my mileage then what was put through in the tests(dyno?)

I should have noted my intake pressure before and after the cleaning, my filter was also pretty bad...had to "wash" it twice.

Think I put maybe 20k miles over 3 years before servicing the filter.

My trips are generally highway 20-30 miles with maybe half of that being hills.

rolling on Toyo AT 265/70/16 tires with TRD version 1 intake and catback exhaust

    Been keeping track with Fuelly:

I've gone 2711 miles now at an average of 15.7mpg.

(93 octane, 10% ethanol (wish I could find pure gas!!!))
