Time to Temp. Sitting Idle vs. Start and drive to warm up

    Over the last week, I have done a few tests regarding how long it takes the vehicle to warm up using different methods. I have found the following:

    starting at 37*
    Start up, and drive off in a regular fashion (Speed limit, normal acceleration)
    it took 4 mins. 40 seconds for the engine to reach 180*. I didnt use the heater until engine at operating temp.

    Starting at 39*
    Start up, and drive off in a regular fashion (Speed limit, normal acceleration)
    Turning on heater at 125*, temp set to max heat, fan on high, it took 8 mins to reach 180*. Note: It took 3 mins to hit 125*, but took longer once the heater was turned on.

    Starting at 37*
    Start up, and let engine idle until 180* took 16 mins. :eek:


    Starting at 38*
    Start engine, sit for 4 mins, then drive off took 8 mins 50 seconds to reach 180*

    Starting at 40*
    start engine, and drive off with liberal throttle applications where able (full throttle onto the freeway, up to 65 mph).
    4 mins. 20 seconds to reach 180*.





    MPG notes. For 1 week, I let my engine idle for 10 mins before driving off. My MPG was 17.5 mpg.

    For 1 week I drove imediately after starting truck, and MPG was 19.1

    Same route and times during these tests, and and I tried to keep my average within 2 mph of the other tests.

    So, it would seem that starting up and just going is the best bet to get heater operation sooner. Nice!! :thumbsup:

    Edit: Better gas mileage too!!

    wow good to know...lately i had noticed that it took forever for my truck to warm up if i turn it on and go with the heater on...:anonymous:

    yeah, That supprised me, but being as the heater, is an heat exchanger using engine coolant, it makes sense.

    Yup...we live in SoCal: sorry lol :cool:

    Also I went out to 7-11 real quick and ran with the header full blast, (2 miles away) left it on cuz I have remote start, was inside for about 10 mins and the needle had just gone up a bit when I got back

    I let my friend borrow my scan gauge so idk what temp it could be

    I live about 3 blocks off the 60, 1 block off of Central.

    I'm just starting to get heat as I'm making the left turn onto the ramp... but it's not enough heat to make it tolerable to turn on the defroster and it pisses me off.

    I really need to do the white wire mod to kill the compressor unless I want it.

    I removed your pic of excessive speeding. Thats not allowed. As for the gauge, the gauge hits the "Normal" range at 130*, and doesnt move from its spot until it goes over 212*. Its not that accurate. All my results were done using an Ultra gauge.
