Toyota has refused all responsibility for the melting DTRL's

I just heard from my local dealer that I've been trying to work with concerning the melting lenses in my '09 Tacoma TRD. I tried to get Toyota to replace the lamp assembly and they would only cover half ($500) towards the replacement and subsequent re-aiming of the head lights.

I then printed out the instructions (found elsewhere on this Forum) to install the relay and jumper wires to turn the DTRL function off, leaving the turn signal function alone. According to the dealer, Toyota will not sign off on, nor allow their dealers to make this modification.

I've asked that I be provided copies of all the paperwork related to this issue concerning my truck so that I may contact Toyota corporate. I'll be expressing my extreme displeasure with their handling of this issue especially since it is a known issue with this lamp assembly. This is my first Toyota vehicle and we are currently looking for a new vehicle for my wife. But, if Toyota does not make this issue right, not only will I not buy a new Toyota, I will not recommend nor will I ever purchase another Toyota vehicle. In fact, I will advise anyone coming to me for advise to not consider a Toyota due to their lack of customer service and failure to correct a know fault in a critical and necessary safety component of the vehicle.

I would also strongly suggest that every member on this Forum having any issue (melting, bubbling, cracking etc.) with the DTRL's write Toyota Corporate expressing their deep disappointment with the quality of Toyota products and the Corporations lack of concern for the customers safety buying the product. With all the negative that Toyota has received during the past few years over safety related issues, you would think that Toyota would be falling all over themselves to correct a known safety issue in a required system, instead of tap dancing around like they are doing.

I had a '91 Escort, trans took a shit.
Took it to the dealer, repaired.
Got it back, was getting 17mpg (car had been getting 35).
Complained.
Service manager said tough shit, I should be happy, his Ranger only got 15.

I contacted corporate.

They gave me a referral... TO THE SAME FUCKER THAT TOLD ME TO POUND SAND IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!!!!



Manufacturers will not accept any liability unless forced by the government.

 

I ripped my headlights open after cooking them in the oven, painted them, then resealed them with windshield sealant.

I wouldn't blame Toyota if they refused to work on my lamps. I also removed the DTRL lens because it looks like shit, so no bubbling. But that's me.

Toyota should do something about this for people who care. I'm not sure enough people do care though.

 

It is bullshit and u have a right to be mad! But . . . . For $500 u could build some trs projector headlights and be much much happier then the stock ones u would be replacing! I know it doesnt fix the customer service part of it but it is actually a good way for u to win

 

i havent had any issue with my dtrl and i installed the relay and jumper on it over a year ago to actually have DTRL. before i didnt have anything

 

I had them replaced, no questions asked. I was still under warranty.

 

That is part of the problem. I bought the truck used in Dec-2011 and when I took possession, the warranty had already 'timed' out. There is an extended warranty but "lenses" are not covered.

I am going to try another dealer (there are several within a 20-mile radius of the house) and see if there is something that one of them will do.

They won't cover the headlight replacement unless it's still under warranty. It sucks, I know.

 

That's how it goes until there's a full recall.

Customer complaints and TSBs are handled under warranty or for charge.
TSBs are simply notices to the dealerships that say "If the customer complains about "this", then "here" is most likely the fix"

Nothing goes beyond warranty until it's an actual recall.

 

or youve reported it while under warranty and it becomes worse after your warranty is up...

 

09 tacoma 73k cracked lenses. my observations are the following ; 1. 99% of owners that have had their lamps replaced were under warranty or had purchased extended coverage. 2. toyotas engineers used the same assemblys as 08 07 06 etc which i beleive dont have drls. thus did not account for the prolong extended heat the drl produces giving us cracked lenses. i hope toyota either gave more space between the lamp and lense or made the lense of a diffrent material on post 09 tacos. 3. i advise anyone with an 09 or 10 who even suspects thier affected to change to led lamps as they are much cooler temp wise
and if u beleive in ads should last a long time. had i known toyota customer care was full of shit and that my lenses were to crack the led lamp swap would have been the cheapest route to go. so inda meantime im just like everyone else S.O.L and honestly i really dont see toyota fixin a dam thing . just think of their cost then the likelyhood and it makes one pessemistic. but hay what do i know theese are just my opinions

My 07 came with dtrls (was an option back then) and show no sign of melting... yet.

 

Seriously? Do you really think Toyota is scared of your potential influence on potential buyers? How many people have you influenced to purchase a specific manufacturer in the past? Lol

It cracks me up whenever people try and act like they can really influence these type of things.

Ray himself posted the TSB that Toyota issued a couple of months ago.
The problem HAS been recognized and admitted to by Toyota.

It won't become a recall unless it is considered to be the cause of an accident or the Feds require it.

Sorry... no help for those of us out of warranty.

Ya... but seriously, one person has much more power than they used to.

15 years ago, corporations didn't give a rat's ass about "word of mouth" because one radio or TV spot reached far more people.
The only thing they took seriously were things run by news stations, such as NBC's (ultimately proven fraudulent) "exploding Chevy trucks"... but GM did redesign the trucks and moved the tanks to the inside of the frame on the GMT400 designs.


But today, automakers pay attention to forums and social media.
They ARE on this forum. They don't post, but they read and report what is being said. GM has 35 employees who's job is to monitor Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, and other Social Media resources.
