Can't stop in snow

Have a 2012 Tacoma TRD O/R and went to apply brakes going down a snowy hill about 15 mph, felt as if brake pedal hit a wall, truck just kept going faster and faster had to steer into snow bank to stop, thought that was scary, 1 minute later same thing and had to exit up a side road to stop. Is it the tires, ABS or truck weight or what!?

 

Sounds like you just kept sliding so that wasnt the ABS...might be the tires or could have happened in any vehicle if the conditions were bad enough.

sounds like ABS braking.. ABS ,and traction control suck in the snow. Turn em off and roll in 4h.

 

Next time use engine braking to slow down. Put the shifter in "2" or "L" if you have to.

Were you in 4WD at the time?

Wait- was the pedal pulsing/vibrating? Could you hear the ABS?

 

The OE tires are downright DANGEROUS on anything other than dry pavement. I would find another set of tires with more aggressive tread ASAP.

 

Same truck, exact same experience and posting here on it last week. Very unsettling that's for sure. If I test driven in snow I would have passed on the truck that's for damned sure.

 

For what its worth...I have a '12 Tacoma. OEM tires, etc. We've had a fair amount of snow and ice and I have yet to put 'er in 4WD to get past anything starting or stopping. I've been impressed with the Tacoma's performance even though its a rear wheel drive truck. It out performs my '07 Ridgeline hands down.

 

Try using 4-3-2 next time

 

The Tacoma's brakes are pretty powerful. If they lock up bad things can happen, like the tail end swinging around.

I'm not sure if the ABS calibration is different in 2WD vs 4WD mode. How does the ECU "know" if you are on snow or on pavement?

 

The tires are the OEM 5 ply BF Goodrich o/r w/fairly aggressive tread. Weather was just typical 3" - 4" slush/snow. Vehicle just acted like a sled.

 

I do not know how the ECU will react on pavement never had to stop that fast. I just feel I could stop better on snow in certain situations if the ABS would just let ME drive the truck
