2.7 vs 3.4 Gas millage, Big difference?

So guys. Im going to be trading in my 2010 tacoma v6 for a first gen. Saving money and will have more money to save.

It there a big difference in the mpg from the 2.7 to the 3.4. I know the 2.7 engine is gonna be slow and no hp and I dont mind that but I do Have a boat I tow and my atv too. So Idk what to do. What engine should I go for guys. Did you guys get the 2.7 and wish you had more power, or did you get the 3.4 and wish you got the 2.7 with better mpg lol. Thanks

 

Go for the 3.4. I get around 19mpg in town. I'd give up a few mpg's for the extra power especially if you're going to be hauling/towing.

 

I have a 2.7L double cab and I mainly get about 17-19mpg. I don't think you will gain anything with a 4 cylinder, you might as well get a v6.

 

Thats true. I do haul some stuff and the power would help me. How many miles to a tank are you getting. Im getting about 230 on mine on my v6 but its lifted.

 

OK Thanks. So your saying I should just get the v6. I wanna get the access cab. I dont need 4 doors anymore. Just me in the truck.

 

I recommend checking out fuelly.com. Click on any year and you can see a fairly large sample of what people with 4cyl vs 6 cyl get. For the first gen it looks like the 2.7l is worth about 2mpg on avg.

With that said, if you have a boat, I would imagine you would be a lot happier with the bigger engine.

 

Thank you. I just checked and yes the 2.7 seems to do better. There getting like 19 to 23 depending on the truck and 4 or 2 doors. Do you know how many miles to a tank I could get.

 

I think the tank on first gens is ~ 18 gallons.

 

Yes I just found that out. If I can get at least 300 on a tank I'm happy. Better then the 230 to 240 i'm getting now

 

I have a 2002 with V6 and automatic and all stock. I am getting 15.8 - 16.5 mpg in the city of Los Angeles. On the highway I am getting about 22 mpg.

My 1987 with the 22R motor and 4x4 with manual tranny got 28 mpg on the highway.

 

A few months back I sold my 05 double cab 4x4/v6-auto and bought a 96 extended cab 4x4 V6/auto. Both were stock and the gas mileage on the 96 is just a little bit better. Maybe 1mpg. However according to the epa estimates it should be the other way around. I often miss the 05 extended cab 4 cyl 4x4 I bought new. 23mpg average and honestly not a whole lot less power than my 96 has.

 

Oh really. See I don't really need the extra power of the v6 expect for to tow my boat and ATv. That's the only reason I need to v6. I found a 02 v6 with only 26,000 miles so I might have to jump on it. I've heard the 4 cyl deff getting better mpg but then other people saying its the same of the v6 lol. I wanna test drive both and see what happens

 

1st gen Tacoma 4 cylinders don't have as much power as the second gens. I've driven a few first gen 4 cylinder 4x4's and they get around fine stock but the second gen 4 cylinder goes pretty good for what it is. I would have actually preferred a 4 cylinder 5 speed 1st gen but I couldn't find a good one.

 

I get 19 in the winter and 22 in the summer out of my S/C V6 on 32's. I geg right at 300 to the tank in the winter and about 330 in the summer.

 

Ive had my truck for 3 weeks. Its a 00 3.4 V6 4x4 5-spd with intake, exhaust, supercharger & 285/75/16 (33x11.5) I just took it on a 4,000 mile road trip & got 18.2-19.5 MPG. Really didnt know what to expect out of it for millage. But Im happy with the MPG I got & I do have a rather heavy right foot...

 

I had a 2.7 liter and now I own a 3.4 liter. I got 21 at best in my 2.7 and now I get 19-20 in my 3.4. Once you add lift and everything the 3.4 will be about equal to the 2.7 but with more power.

 

I have a 02 extended cab 4x4 2.7 5spd. I consistently get between 23-25 on every fill up. Most people I talk to with the v6 get around 19. In my eyes that's a big difference.

 

That is a very big difference. Thanks for posting it. I want to get a 2.7 and trying to find one now. It i could get about 20 mpg, I would be happy.

 

Glad to help. I should add that I live in the mountains of NC, drive approx. 70 highway 20 county roads and 10 in town. I'm a pretty conservative driver and I keep track every full up.
I don't regret the 2.7 at all! I did test drive an automatic though and would have went for it if I still lived on flat land but was concerned that it would be able to hold speed going up and down the mountains on the highway .
