You said it was through thick woods...did the bullet hit something and shatter? My dad shot a coyote a few weeks back and hit a small tree right before it hit the coyote, and it looked like he almost sawed the dog in half.

That is very possible. A 243 would never make an entrance hole that big without hittin somethin first haha

Yea, I'm usin a .243 right now, too. Upgrading to a .30-06 shortly because I want a bigger entrance/more blood in case it's not the greatest hit (like the one I couldn't find this year).

You lose em ether way.. Just aim for the front shoulder and hit em. If u shoot farther back you hit vitals, if you hit the shoulder they blow out and he's pushin himself with his hind legs until he's dead. I've lost deer with big calibers and I've personally seen a couple taken down with 22s. Both of which were heart shots. Trick is let em die. lost one years back that played possum on me until i got down and ran off like yours did. i never get down until. At least 30 mins after I shoot em now whether they go down or not.

I'm sayin you hit a branch or sapling and the bullet blew up. Havin a larger caliber helps a lot, but you can still hit em and they get away. Seen it many times. Happened this year to a guy that hunts with us. Found a piece of leg bone and some blood. No deer. My cousin hit one last year that fell down and flopped around. He did his victory dance and the sonofabitch jumped up and ran. Shot in the brisket and we looked for 3 days but didnt find it

I know I'll still lose one every now and then, it would just be nice to have a bigger entrance/possibility for more blood for those occasions I don't make the perfect shot

Have till the end of the month here, the rut is starting to take off, it's always late in the season here. Anyway, seen this poor guy right the entrance to my work last night, most likely was chasing. Shame.

Currently deployed to Kuwait, so I missed the Fall 2012 hunting season and I'll miss the Spring 2013 season. If all goes well, I'll be home for the Fall 2013 season, but will most likely miss the elk archery season. I bought a Mathews Heli-m this past fall thinking that I would be able to make it out before we left. Looking forward to returning home, so I can hit the woods.

Well yesterday was our last day for the season here. I didn't see a dang thing. Ended up with a 7 point and a 5 point this year. Pretty slow year for me

I was sick this weekend so I didn't even get to go. Yesterday was the last day. Saw plenty of deer this year, but only ended up with a spike and the big one I couldn't find. Oh well. I'll be back next year.

Yeah I saw a good amount of deer this year. I wanted to kill a big buck. Hopefully I get a chance next season. Time to bring out my boat now
