Stolen Spare

Some social parasite stole my spare while I was gone on vacation.

What options are there for securing the spare against theft?

 

There are such things as spare tire locks but I don't know anything about using one on the Tacoma. Maybe I should, though...

 

Spare tire locks protect by a special key just like your mag wheel locks. The key slips over the the jack handle and slides in a matched sleeve. It also comes with a slip over adapter the extends over the end of the cable in the bracket that holds the spare up. That way the cable can't be cut from the bottom. About $35.

Were you parked at your house? Or was the truck in a parking garage or something? Not that it matters....

THe one thing my Dodge Ram had that was kinda neat.... it had wheel locks (similar to mcgaurd) PLUS you needed the wheel lock key to even drop the spare down. But then again - anyone with bolt cutters can cut the cable. Even if you got a chain & lock - they could cut that also. But - what's stopping them from taking all 4 of your other wheels too?

Can you claim that on your insurance?

Is your TPMS going off all the time now cuz one of the wheels is missing - or doesn't it work like that?

It was parked at my apartment in a carport. I should be able to claim it on my insurance. Fortunately my deductible for theft is low. I filed a police reports and am waiting on the incident number.

I bought locking nuts for the other wheels on the truck. You need the key to get the nut off. I hadn't thought about the spare.

 

A rep for shooting dirt bags who do that helps.

 

Yeah, if it just wasn't for that whole "20 to life" thing.

The Sheriff`s Dept. gave me the rep.
Thanks to the Investigater friend on a burg.
He said you are lucky you did not do this a little south of here. I would not be calling for transport. I`d be calling the morgue.
Of course the story soon spread. I heard it from a Bailiff. John should have told me. He was just scaring the kids. And did not think much of it. We are both combat vets. So it is credable.
I did not like it at first.
But things have been mighty peacefull.
Let John deal with it. He has more resources than I do.
The BG`s just commit their crimes elsewhere. not in my jurisdiction.
The fact that I shoot a lot and my range is visable from a road may help.
I use a lot of armor plate action targets as well as paper.
They stay there and I like recoil.

I ran one of those 3/16" thick plastic coated cables through the spare tire and around the frame and added a brass lock to the loop ends. It will not stop those with tools and a lot of time but it will prevent someone from just lowering it down and rolling it off. I made sure the lock ended up way inside the center piece to help prevent dirt and mud from filling up the keyhole.

 

That sucks man, thats pretty focking low to steal someones spare.

Wow, what a great find for him... a $35 spare rim and stock tire. HAs anyone ever looked at the spare? Damn, is it ugly. Then again, bet this guy is too.

You can get a 16x7 steelie for $35 from tirerack.com for your replacement rim, craiglist or classified for any used 245/75 16 tire. Be cheaper that dealer.

 

The tailgate has a pop-n-lock gate lock.

 

...put the spare on the garage, thats the best option.

 

Guys, here is how low some can go. I go out to get into my PINTO and someone has stolen the drivers side wheels and tires which faces away from the house. $20 worth of used tires and wheels! Now that Pinto ran me for 13 years when I needed it most, never got pulled over by any cops either.

Some are born "low" and never crawl out of that hole......

 

If only I had a garage. Plus I'd have to hope my flat occurred in or near the garage.

 

That sucks man, can't people just do the right thing.

 

This happened twice on my last truck, the first time somebody cut the cable holding the spare, the second i had the spare on the back on my truck padlocked with a steel cable and the same thing happened. I finally just got a big a$$ chain with a master lock and it never happened again.
