At least I know that if s**t ever hits the fan in this house, I'm not going to be the one taking the blame. My Dad works full time, as I do, so I can understand him not doing much around the house. He's exhausted. But my mom and siblings have no excuse- Mom sits on the computer and naps all day, doesn't even cook dinner or vacuum any more. People wonder why I'm 95 pounds- it ain't all from being a naturally little guy. My older sister works two days a week, does nothing around the house. My three younger siblings (ages 13, 14 and almost 17,) are in school, but do nothing productive when home. It really does drive one nuts.

I agree on that for design/aesthetics. It does look better. however, the joists don't necessarily work out that way in real life. Laying the floor perpendicular to the floor joists helps reduce deflection. Less deflection means less chance of nails to work their way loose from the subfloor and cause squeaks.

 

My wife wants progress too but she helps with the work and isn't afraid to get dirty.

Very true but he is laying a floating floor. So this has no nails.

 

Any experience with laying a floating floor under or around a toilet ?

As for floating under a toilet. Just add a flange extension. Then cut the flooring to leave yourself some wiggle room (about 1/2") for expansion and contraction around the flange but not so much that the toilet base wont cover it. Then just install the toilet the same way you normally would.

 

I would just pull the toilet and place the floor under it (it's super easy to pull a toilet). I think you can get a taller wax ring if the flooring isn't super thick. I'd prefer it under the toilet just because it'll look cleaner. No matter how crappy you cut the hole, it'll be covered by the toilet. The cuts have to be much cleaner and more precise if it's around the toilet.

 

Agreed. My concern is that the instruction call for a gap of 3/8 or more on a floating floor for expansion and contraction. I put this gap around the walls and kitchen cabinets - trim hides the gap. What I was wondering is if I have to be concerned with expansion and contraction if the the toilet is on top of the floor. I have heard horror stories about floating floors that were put down by contractors that didn't know what they were doing and or didn't care. The floors look great until the check clears but with no room for expansion and contraction they soon start to buckle. Thanks.

 

I would just cut it a little bigger than the hole. The toilet won't be attached to the floor so I would think it should be fine.

Cleaning out and trying to organize the garage in order to park the Tacoma and the Charger in the garage. It is an ongoing fight.

 

I feel your pain...I have to put stuff in my truck bed to fit the Tacoma and the wifes 4Runner into our garage.

Short answer: Still up in the air.

Long story: That isn't really a house - It's a pilot lounge where I work. Hurricane Isaac did some damage to the roof which caused massive leaking - which destroyed alot of drywall. Because of gov't contracting rules we could either 1) Get vinyl laminate tiles installed by a contractor or 2) get a nicer type of floor and install it our selves. We went with option 2.
However, there is still need to excise and replace a fair bit of drywall, so the trim hasn't been discussed yet. My guess is we'll install a basic wood trim painted black or stained.

Still two more couches, a foosball table, and dining room table to get in there. And maybe a desk and computer too. And a rug or two....

 

I was thinking you lived in a commercial building cheap, good location maybe

 

Started building a chicken coop today.

Even got itself a plywood door. Gonna build roost boxes for em with a ramp to get up em. Keepin em for eggs mostly but I'll make me a dinner out of em every once in a while.
