Drove a borrowed pinto wagon for a while with no complaints. Went to finace a vehicle through a major bank and the one vehicle they would not finace was a Suzuki Samurai, not that I would want one.

It was actually a freakin awesome off roader, but the insurance institute figured out how to make them roll on command and it ended up killing the design, so we got the Geo Storm/Vitara/Sidekick replacement.

The cost to fix the pinto rear end fire issue was six dollars a car and ford decided to risk the legal costs, the vega had two real issues, aluminum block (which they replaced under warranty) and rust issues.

On the other hand, Chrysler simply sold rebranded mistubishis as their Colt and Arrow line and had the same luck.

It took Toyota following Deming's Quality guidelines that allowed them to increase quality and beat GM in car sales.

All my friends in the 70's had Pintos, Vegas, Gremlins, Darts, Nova, Dusters, Mavericks and all were about worn out at 100k miles. The big three automakers thought that cheap oil would be forever and the EPA would go away, and that was their downfall. However, cheap oil is gone and EPA rules the land, and the cars are better for it. Without EPA, fuel injection and cars that run 100k miles without maintenance would be a dream. Oh yea, plus clean air and water.

does turning tires to black wall out count? How bout added snug top rebel.

    image.jpg

By far the worst cars we ever owned were government auction ford fairmonts. My grandpa would by them any time they came up, always a light shade of green, but none the exact same color. We had five or six from age 10 through 15, kinda disposable, we'd do minor maintenance, but something big motor or tranny, we just parked in family junkyard.

    Couple memories from the fairmonts:
My grandpa and I were going to the family ranch, about 30 miles from his house. We were on the freeway(i25), luckily for us my grandpa drove slow, 45 in a 55. All of a sudden the passenger front tire starts separating the tread from the tire carcass, tire stayed inflated, but the tread starts hitting fender liner fender, at the same time the tire is locking up every time the tread flaps and put the car into a slide. We slid of the road ending up on right shoulder, perpendicular to traffic. The tread had torn out fender liner, tore off passenger fender, destroyed firewall, destroyed he hood, and finally wrapped around front bumper ripping it off. Probably the one time I was happy grandpa was going slow! This is exactly what happened to the ford exploders with Firestones, tread separated and driver really has no control, if we had been going faster, or in a taller vehicle we would of rolled for sure. That was the last time my grandpa put RETREADS on any of his vehicles!

The other big memory I have of the fairmonts is when I was about to turn 12, my dad agreed to buy me a three wheeler for my birthday. My cousins had a couple Honda 125's, but were really tight in letting me ride, so my dad said he'd buy me one. We went looking at all the local dealers, I wanted a Honda 200x so bad, it was running $1500 new in 84, but my dad decided to buy me the Yamaha 200 instead, it was only $1100 new. I begged him to buy the Honda, frustrating my dad big time, he said these words I'll NEVER forget.
"Son, I want to drive a Ferrari, but I'm driving a fucking ford fairmont!! Be happy with whatever you get!"
So I was, I drove circles around my cousins little 125's, and could pretty much keep up with anybody in town that had a three wheeler, except the 250r's or 350x's. Still wish he had bought me the 200x, my Yamaha didn't have rear suspension, probably why my neck is so f'd up.

My dad had the diesel Olds. What a crap wagon. I think that was Olds' answer to the first Arab Oil Embargo.
