Play around in my back yard which is pretty much flat. I might race later on but not right now. Really just trying to figure out if i like the hobby.

Rustler is 2wd, has a little more ground clearance, not made for a track or muhc else then flat surfaces. The exo is lower, 4wd, handles much much better, look much more scale imo, has the ability to to goto a track and mess around, or bash through different terrain.

If you get a rustler atleast get a vxl one, a brushed one is no good and you will loose interest real quick in its lack of speed. as far working on each one, the rustler is stupid simple from the front to back, the exo isnt too bad but you do need to remove a wheel and i think its 16 screws to get the exo cage off to start working.

If your going to be running mostly on grass, you may wanna look at a monster truck of some sort, small diameter tyres and thick grass don't work very well together.

very true, kinda why i said the rustler has more clearance then the exo, it handles grass pretty good really.

A stampede 2wd vxl sounds better for him.

Bought my 5 year old nephew one for Christmas, so far it's been pretty tough, (has to be with him) and handles "yard duty" very well. He wants me to carry him to the track, maybe his weekend.

    Yeah.
My wife had been getting me cheap micro helicopters for xmas for a few years, most of them crap. Last year she did some research and got me a Syma S107G. Neat little helicopter to goof around with, but kind of boring after a while.

This year I did some more research and got one of these Blade 120's:
    http://www.horizonhobby.com/product...st-_-BLH3100&gclid=COOWkf2QyrQCFSTZQgodRmkA6w

I tried to fly it like the Syma and broke a skid within the first 24 hours and took some pretty big chunks out of the main rotors. Big difference in how this one flies! Picked up some spare parts and an extra battery and am getting a lot better -- I can keep it airborne in my basement for a full battery now and only crash when I try to do something new. Not a lot of room for error in the basement.

The 120 is a fun little bird for learning orientation and quite fast outdoors (can't handle much wind). The skids are a joke, especially in cold weather, so keep a set or two around. Go over to Helifreaks.com and you can pick up a few more tips on how to get the most out of this heli.

Just got a new Stampede 4x4 VXL brushless for christmas. Heck of a lot of fun to drive. Seems really well balanced for a monster truck and jumps pretty level. Handles really well and it actually took me effort to roll it. And being able to drive it in the snow without concern for the electronics is awesome. Picked up a couple of 2S 5000MAH LiPos - what a difference over the stock NiMH! Wheelies on demand!

Must say, after having 4 or 5 nitro cars and trucks over the years, I'm sold on electric. No more futzing with the A/F mix or glow plugs or bad fuel. Just plug in the battery and it goes.

Anyone have recommendations for my first hop ups?

First thing id get is a set of wheels and tires, then some aluminum rear hubs I used to break those. You probably want to get some rpm arms too.

Awesome, thanks for the advice. Figure I'll burn through the first set of tires pretty quickly and a-arms are always the first thing to get broken :D

Tires are the first thing id recommend, the 2.8 proline trenchers are a very awesome tire on the stampede and last a good while. Id also say get some rpm bumpers and a arms since there a fairly cheap upgrade. Other then that I wouldnt change much until it breaks.. Just have fun with it

    Yeah.
Yeah, I'm not sure why I have no trouble driving an RC car in any direction, but I am struggling with flying this thing toward me. I'm getting better, but yeah, I need to take it outside this weekend when it warms up (if there is no wind) to see what it can really do. I have a cache of spare parts now . . . but thinking I can make temporary skids out of coat hanger wire if I need to. Hopefully I don't catch the bug for bigger ones . . . too many projects/hobbies already.

Cause everything is backwards coming toward you. I know it kinda is with a car, but not the same. One day, boom, and then it'll all make sense. BTW, if you don't want another, bigger one. Stop flying the one you have now.
