They did fix it. The problem only impacted '72 and '73 models. It was corrected in production by '74.

They simply decided that litigation would be cheaper than a recall.
They can't get away with that today. Fed oversight requires a recall for safety issues.

How did they miss the Pacer or the Gremlin?

The Pacer and Gremlin had solid mechanicals and were very reliable. But they are not attractive cars so people like to punk them because of their looks. In fact the Gremlin X was available *stock* from the factory with a 305cid V8, and drag modified examples are not hard to find. I put 100k miles on mine without any issues of any kind, then sold it for a profit.

Simply put, they don't belong on the list of "Top Ten Worst Cars Ever."

Where's the RX8? I don't know of anyone who's owned one that can't be legally declared a lemon.

Exactly right! The original amc pacer was supposed to come with a rotary engine, but at the last min the company who was going to supply amc with the lighter in weight rotarys backedout so amc had to drop a jeep inline 6 in the pacer, forgetting that since the jeep engines are heavier than the rotarys, amc never compensated the pacers front end suspention and steering rack components to take the extra weight of the jeep engine, the pacers are pretty solid if not for this mishap lol

My HS buddy had a Vega. The transmisison was a mystery, and the sounds the engine made seemed to have nothing to do with what the car was doing. I think it was this model, but in far worse shape:

[IMG]He redeemed himself with a Celica that he put Webers on and then an FJ40.

Another buddy had a Chevette and also a Maverick, which we called the Mad Dick. It was in slightly better shape than this one.

My dad bought a Plymouth Volare, which he regrets to this day.

LOL, talk about pintos. I remember seeing one a few months ago at the auto parts store. I pulled in and a young kinda nerdy dude walked out of the store and got into his pinto wagon. He tried starting it but it would just crank over. I walked in just to look at something and walked out a few minutes later, dude was still there and trying to start it. I get in my truck and start it up and the guy like slams his head into the steering wheel and holds it like hes gonna cry.

I drive out of there and pull up to the red light, wait a few minutes there, and here comes that rusty old pinto right behind me lol!

I felt so bad for him but it was a little funny, it took him like 10 minutes to get that thing started.

Seriously... the Mustang-II was based on the Fairmont platform. The 5.0 didn't have the chassis to get the (limited) power to the ground.

Yup it was a 302 I think with a 4 speed top loader. That was also my first trans I tore down to do the syncros and also the shift forks had these little plastic shims (for lack of a better word) on them. They were sent through the trans never to be seen again. The trans would grind without them cause the syncros would never fully mesh

Dad bought a '73 Vega GT hatchback when he decided to upgrade from his '63 Falcon.
Nice, economical car. Had the "Satoshi-like" grille... looked like a baby '71 Camaro.
He drove it for 6 months and traded it in on a '74 K5 Blazer.
