None of the engines can expell enough flow to creat any back pressure in a modern cat....Or resistance. Scavenging is the main performance factor here, and many mods to the exhaust, if not thought out, can mess that up, thus resulting in a performance loss.

I learned a lot from reading your article, it does make a great deal of sense, so thank you. I am still confused though
Wouldn't extending your headers with long tube headers and increasing your stock 2.25" piping to 2.5" make it too 'open' and not create not enough back pressure? I thought that the combo of those two would, personally. Especially when compared to just cutting a cat and leaving stock pipes.
In your opinion, or if you've seen dyno tests that'd be even better, would adding a cold air intake and just cutting a cat (keeping stock muffler/2.25" piping) merit ANYTHING?

If any exhaust has backpressure, its restrictive. OEM exhuast systems have no backpressure. With the 3.4, the combination of long tube headers, and the 2.5" pipe, seems to increase the efficiency of the scavenging. On the 3.4, "Cold Air" intakes, like K&N, cause a 5 hp loss. Cutting the cat does nothing. Best gains have been with the deck plate mod (4"), as far as intakes go.

    Good to know. Thanks.

Would exhaust shops reject work if you wanted a resonator installed in place of a cat?

A single 2.5 and long tubes on a 3.4 will not be too open. You do not want to create any back pressure. The objective of an exhaust is to remove gases quickly and efficiently. Having back pressure means that there is a restriction, which is not good.

Also imo gutting is actually going to hurt performance, I've seen it do it before. Not sure if I would be correct on this, maybe some will chime in but here is my theory. I think it is based off the shape of a cat, it was never designed to flow well without the honeycomb. A gutted cat is kinda like fitting 14 people through 14 doors and then fitting them through 2 doors. They are going to fall on there face upon exit. This "falling on there face is going to create turbulence and restriction and hurt the exhaust gas flow.

Trust me. I had a flowmaster dumped with the cats on. This is way deaper in tone. The camera takes away from it

You are exactly correct! "Gutting" a cat creates turbulance in the body of the cat, thus screwing up the exhaust pules, reducing the effectivness of scavenging, and ultimately creating a power loss.
