Absolutely! They saved $1.18 on each truck by doing that.

 I'm laughing because more than likely, this was the reason.

Either/Or someone FINALLY asked, "why the hell are these in here?".

One always has bungies in it that I use all the time. The other one has been used as a really dirty shoe holder after a day at the beach with my kids.

I use them all the time ..

Well, looks like us 2013 owners are just going to have to use our bungee cords to hold down our rope ends and loose shoes.

It was always a great temporary holding spot for me, especially when camping, or cutting firewood, or just doing things around the yard.

Whenever a I needed a spot to stash things, I could put them in there and always know where they were: Phone, lighter, bottle opener, flashlight, keys, knife, etc...

It also kept things dry when it was raining. Whenever I would set out for a mountain bike ride in the rain, that's where I would stash my wallet, keys, and phone before they got put in my Camelback.

There was no good reason to get rid of them except to give us less truck for more money.

The price of these trucks has gone up quite a bit since I bought my '09, and as far as I can tell, the quality is cheaper all the way around, but that's a topic for a different thread.

From what I recall, those cubbies were only there because the factory tool that lifted the beds into place grabbed them in the cutout there. My guess is they revised the factory tool and no longer need those cutouts.

A few mods here and there and counting....
I imagine cutting the hole out isn't so hard since the bed is composite and then order the cubbies from the dealership. I use mine to housed bedlights.

This. Just make sure they didn't add any reinforcement ribs in that area, and cut out with a body saw or jigsaw. Measure location and make a template from another tacoma that has them.

...that's what she said. (Sorry, couldn't resist)

On topic though - I actually use them fairly often for stuff that I want to air out but not slide all over the place, or just quick storage of little things that I don't want to lose (Bolts, etc.) when I'm working on things in the bed.

Of course, this means that the BedRug will need to be redesigned.

They have a couple of options...
A completely new one for 2013
Don't expect that unless Toyota tells BedRug exactly when their next redesign will be and if the new bed will be the same as the 2013

Separate panels that zip in... still requires retooling of the existing rug.

Separate panels that velcro to the bed... pretty cheesy and not very secure.
