    From Toyota :

Stopping distance when ABS is operating will exceed that of normal conditions

The ABS is not designed to shorten the vehicle's stopping distance . Always maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you in the following conditions :

~ When driving on dirt , gravel or snow-covered roads

    From Wiki :

ABS generally offers improved vehicle control and decreases stopping distances on dry and slippery surfaces for many drivers; however, on loose surfaces like gravel or snow-covered pavement, ABS can significantly increase braking distance, although still improving vehicle control.[1]

Ok you're right. It is stability control that is required by law, and that didn't become law until 2012. And even though it functions off of abs, abs is still not required by law.

That is Nissan Navara with the same traction control as Tacoma has. So. ?
Edit: that's exactly what VSC does, hence why it's dangerous on super slippery roads.

Bingo. We have the correct answer.

I am with you on this. I think all these hotrods just expect everything to work perfect when they are driving balls to the walls. And I even feel like I rally the shit out it and it still works just fine.

So the " correct answer " is ABS stops you quicker than without on snow ?

Yep traction control fixed his spin and send him where wheels where pointing - in front of 18 wheeler.

That was my point.... The stories are all over the place from one extreme to the other. That is why I believe neither exttreme and feel the Truth is somewhere in the middle. In other words ABS is working properly. No system will work perfectly In all conditions. That would be an engineering impossibility. You can only try and drive within the capabilities of the system.

I didn't contradict my earlier statement at all.

There is more than that to it though , he drifts onto the snow and the front end snaps left , presumably due to driver's side rear wheel spin , the snap to the right after that is probably a combo of VSC , driver over correction and the rear tires now on the snow

beyond that he/she is a passenger and no amount of traction control or lack of traction control would change the outcome

If by working properly , you mean the ABS engages at the slightest sign of tire slip , then I totally agree , the ABS is doing what it was programmed to do , unfortunately it's not beneficial on low traction surfaces like snow

I don't see how it can be other than a contradiction to agree that ABS stops you quicker on snow after stating " ABS increases stopping distances in all conditions " but maybe that's a misunderstanding of your comments on my part

I should clarify my first point by saying

" not beneficial on low traction surfaces with regard to stopping distances "

Over 60 is exactly right with his explanation. Before abs, You where told to pump brakes to regain traction. the abs pumps it faster and better than you ever will. The problem is people do not understand what is happening. Because when activated your pushing pedal harder with no reaction. Because of this it feels like it is taking longer to stop. I believe in some instances, highly skilled professional drivers have been able to outstop abs. The oh crap factor comes from the truck isnt stopping any faster because of traction conditions from either road or tires and you as a human could not be doing any better. Well done over 60

There are some techniques to help ABS braking in the snow/ice/gravel, I believe you can affect the intensity of the ABS by backing off the brake and re-applying which should turn down the amount of pulsations letting the tires lock up easier.

I'll see if I can find the article..
