DIY AUX Input in 05+ Stock Head Unit that overrides FM

The issue is not the ground... It has to do with the way the DSP chip inthe radio amplifies sound. It basically amplifies the sound that is the loudest. on the input, so if the CD you have playing has loud music on it, it could overide, even just slightly, your jack you have soldered in. Another method would be to de-solder the wires from the CD contact and use a jack like I've listed above with a 4 conductor cable. This would then disconnect the audio coming from the CD player so that it cannot bleed through.

 

Not a bad idea, but I guess that the title of this thread is a little miss-leading. This mod overrides all tuner capabilities, FM and AM. Since the DSP uses 1 input for the Tuner and that is where I tapped in, it doesn't matter if you are on FM1, FM2, or AM this mod will override it. To do what you are asking, you would have to figure out how to tap into/re-program the tuner chip and don't believe it can be easily done.

 

Has this mod been tried on the jbl units?

 

I have not heard of it yet. Mine is a standard model. fbconvert was going to test on his JBL unit if he had time. His mod works on all units, but uses the CD player and requires a CD be in the player to work.(http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/au...iy-aux-input-2005-2008-factory-head-unit.html)

 

Can anyone tell me the amount of resistance the two resistors have? I messed up one of mine, and need to know what to replace it with. ASAP please!

 

Someone else had the same issue. I believe that they are not actually resistors but filtering capacitors. I would try to get 2 2.2uf bi-polar capacitors from RadioShack and see if that will work for you. I had one PM that the person tried resisters and could not get any volume. Seems like they would be filtering caps to me at that point. Let me know if that works.

I would suggest adding a switch (button) to the circuit that can disable aux input without having to unplug your device. Pretty simple addition that would add convenience.

Would the numbers be the same for the solder points on a Jbl unit. I finally found r256/255 and r355/356. Watya think.

 

Really hard to tell. The JBL unit may use a different DSP Chip and if it does, then inputs may be in a different place. Look around on your board and make a note of the numbers on any chips like the one pictured in mine. Look them up on Google and you will probably find a wiring diagram with all the inputs and outputs. That's how I located mine.

 

I found them but i already did the cd player mod. Much easier to do. I still messed up though. Lol. I dont have sound outa my left side while listening to a cd but thru the aux input it works just fine. Lol. I had an issue gettin the solder to stick on the left pin. But i got it to stay eventually. Lol. I dont need the cd player anymore anyways.

 

i broke a cap. so i was wondering if the polarity is important while installing the cap. please i need a reply asap thanks.

 

The replacement capacitors I listed should be non-polarized, so it should not matter. If the Cap you have has a - or + listed on it, it is probably the wrong one.

 

What does the screen on the radio look like when you are using the fm aux mod?

 

Ok, I need some suggestions, because I'm having a few issues. I followed these instructions on this thread, but with nothing plugged into the AUX, the radio plays only out of the drivers side speakers. When I plug the cable into the AUX, the sound comes out of both sides, and when I plug my ipod in, the radio stops, but I cannot hear the ipod music. The entire time, there is a high pitched whining static noise.

Any help or suggestions would be fantastic. I'm kind of a newb at audio stuff. Thanks!

 

Not really sure it can be fixed. I did the same thing to mine but i did the cd player aux. u can mess with the aux plug while the radio is playng and ground the aux out and u will get sound outta both speakers. But that would take some playing around with and is a hassle. Maybe u can call some repair shop that deals with this kinda stuff and see if they can help. Luckily it doesnt bother me becuase i listen solely to my iphone when in my truck.

 

Hmm, ya it's pretty confusing. I removed the wires from the circuit board, and now the radio works just like it did before. Maybe my soldering skills just aren't up to par. The connections in there are a LOT smaller than I thought they'd be.

 

The contacts you attach to are very small and it is easy to either over-solder them or under-solder them. I messed up the 1st time but was able to repair it and still make it work with the AUX jack installed. Helps to use a fine solder and a low wattage/small solder iron (not a solder gun as they are way to big for this).

 

UPDATE 1-26-2013: The resistors listed below are actually Capacitors. If you mess one up, simply go to RadioShack and purchase some 2.2uf bipolar capacitors to replace. Make sure you replace both, not just one.

Do you have a picture of the caps you bought? I couldn't find any surface mount ones.
