Well, it's not no Gen I, but time and progress marches on and we have to adapt to it. That's how I look at it.

I find my 09 is great in snow with my studded general grabbers on it. In 4x4 it is awesome, and in 2wd it's even better than expected. My dad has a newer avalanche and I find the taco in 2wd is better than that in 2wd. Is there a way to turn off the stability control in the taco? It not the greatest if you want to play around in a parking lot.

The beeping usually means it's not engaged

Mine doesn't beep going into 4HI , the light just flashes until it engages and then stays lit

If it's beeping and you don't see the VSC lights go on, you're not in 4LO. Hit the gas a little bit and you should be able to tell if you're in 4LO. Can't miss the roar of the engine when going 5 MPH

I am not sure what the ultimate in snow would be, but I can tell you I pulled a stuck FedEx truck out of a snow bank last weekend. Sadly my wife didn't take pictures when she jumped out of the truck to watch :)

Put the Taco in 4Lo and backed up, no problem and the FedEx guy was thrilled :)

My stock TRD sport did fine in dry snow, when I got into wet snow on a trip this last week it was awful. ABS is why to sensitive in wet snow with the cheap Dunlop tires.

My '11 access cab, six speed with studded snowflake stamped firestone winterforce UV with studs does just fine on icy and snowy mountain roads. I live up in the national forest, 1/2 mile off the nearest paved road, and we get snow in feet up here.

If you are having trouble get rid of your mud and AT tires and get snows, they make a tremendous difference.

I've driven in snow three times. Once in a Camry, once in a Tahoe and once in my 2011 Tacoma. I'd take the tacoma any day. Even in 2wd, it felt better than the Tahoe in 4x4 and Camry.

Now I'm no winter driving expert, but I'd say that the BFG all terrains on the tacoma probably are the cause for my decision...Just like Offroad in sand or mud, you need the right type of tires to get you where you wanna go...

You don't see people complaining that their Mud Grapplers perform poorly in sand, their racing slicks have horroble wet weather traction, and that their highway street tires perform poorly in mud, so the posts that say their stock cheap ass Dunflops/Rugged Fails perform badly in snowy winter conditions really mindfuck me. The only thing between you and the road is that 3"x10" patch of rubber making contact...the least you can do as a responsible driver is get the right tires for the job...

Anyone that has posted that they are driving on snow with :gasp: Snow Tires :gasp: says that they don't understand all the complaints....go figure.

And this is coming from a 24 yr old Native Floridian that has only seen snow a handful of times.
