4x4 conversion?

If you are making a rock crawling trailer queen then do it.

Other than that trade it.

 

Mine is not a trailer queen nor is Ray's. But they will climb rocks like a mountain goat.

In Utah thats a trailer queen.

Tires can not stick out the side of vehicle to be legal on road.

That is a sweet truck and all but it can't carry 10 bags of cement and 20 2x6x10's any more. If its just for play its sweet but it can't do work anymore.

 

None of these 4x4 conversion threads make any sense to me. If you have lots of free time, and tons of spare cash, by all means hack away and create a 4x4 out of a 2wd. Or just buy a stock 4x4, and mod the shit out of it. In the end, they will both be 4x4 Tacos. Where I live, a 2wd is out of the question thankfully, and I have never regretted having a 4x4. I have never owned a 2wd anything. The only cars I have ever owned where 80-84 Subaru 4x4's. Those cars can rally.

And thats why I have an F250. This truck was designed to carry me and my family ANY where we want to go. Not to do work other than that.

 

And this is why there are so many different colors and foods and cars and house's and motor cycles and books and tv shows and.... well you get the idea.

checked out the prerunner conversion bulhas posted, very interesting, but there is no way that is even feasible for the average person, just trade and get a 4X4 if that is what you want. If not keep the pre and be happy, both are good trucks.

started reading into the fj t-case, that might be a better option with the rear e-locker.


the conversion takes some time, I spent about $1700 in parts(whole 4x4 drivetrain from a doner truck) and doing the work myself, most of it bolts in. I'll have to fab some stuff as well.


looking back, trading in would have been easier, but i've learned a ton of stuff doing it myself...it's hard to put a price on knowledge.

 

Not really by the time you figure it out you could that swap for about 5000 to 8000 and thats being generous, by the time you account extra mods trade in loss extra interest, are you really that far out of the normal price range

 

Thats what others have figured as well. Most people who do this conversion, do it to a truck that has been heavily modified already and the trade in value wouldn't be that high. Now if someone was going to do it to a bone stock truck I'd say trade it in. Thats when it makes sense to take the loss and just buy a 4x4. Then you can start to buy other parts for it like suspension, wheels and tires, bumpers, winches, etc.

Both of the trucks i've swapped have been highly modified already and both were paid off. Both owners would have lost their shorts trading them in and trying to buy a 4x4 not to mention the fact that now they have to go out and purchase all that other crap as well.

Makes more sense to just swap it.

Ray had a ton of stuff on his truck before the swap. He liked it and didn't want to have to start over.


We did the swap and promptly took him for a spin.


There is another being done in Canada that is using the FJ case and the Marlin Crawler "taco Box". Should be a good build when it's done. There is no build thread on it yet but when there is I'll link to it.

 

So without doing a crawler box, what would to estimate the total cost to be to collect parts and have the work done?

 

i presume like i said anywhere from 5000 to 8000ish, but thats just my rough, Wyatt would know a lot better

 

Yeah this was more geared towards Wyatt, should have said his name I guess. In looking at the parts list you could probably get mostly new parts and the work done for the $8k mark. May have to keep an eye out for used parts at a good price.

Nope! Just paint it and take the 4x4 switch out. Call it good. Oh yeah.... paint a couple of fake doors on the back too.

 

It depends on what parts you use and if you get them or the person doing the swap has to get them. $4,000 to $8,000 would be a good ball park. Low side is using used parts at a good price and the high side is using lo mile or new parts that your shop sources. It just depends.

Keep in mind that even at the high side of this, it's cheaper than what my complete front axle would cost you retail with all the brackets and links attached. And WAY cheaper than both of my axle's complete at retail.

It's all relative.

 

Why would you want to spend 8 grand and use used parts? If i'm spending that kind of money you'd be damn sure i'd use new parts.
