Terrible Hopping in 4WD!

    Okay,

    So I was driving through some deep snow in 4WD with the rear locked, and when ever I accelerated I had this insane whole truck hopping sensation until I let of the gas. Any ideas what it could be? I'm baffled... In the end I had to go down the road at like 3 miles per hour so it wouldn't start hopping. Kinda new to the 4WD scene so be easy on me :crapstorm:

    Also this has never happened before while doing the same thing, it just started doing it...

    Just an Idea of what I was driving through...

    were your wheels spinning or were you just driving down the road with no wheel spin. I know with no weight in the bed of my truck i was in some deep snow at work, a foot or more, i had it in 4 low and rear end locked and it started hopping. I let off the gas and eased into it and it was fine. So i think it might just be wheel hop. Someone please correct me if im wrong

    I had a similar problem in deep sand. Wheel hop can be caused by worn springs and shocks.

    your wheel hop is likely related to leaf spring deflection
    and axle wrap.

    Could be your leaf paks are worn/tired... or just too soft
    and this might give way to more axle wrap.

    I went to a custom 9lf pak
    for the very same reason.

    Wheel hop/spring wrap is less...
    and can be better controlled by the operator.

    bigger, more aggresive tires don't help in the matter

    Wheel hop happens when the traction of the tires exceeds the forward progress of the truck. The traction of the tires causes the axle to move forward and the springs to bend in a "S" shape instead of a "U" shape.
    If the truck can't move forward fast enough, the torque has to go somewhere. Eventually the springs overcome the torque and snap back to their "U" shape, again and again and again. This is axle wrap.

    When I have wheeled in deep powder, snow would pack on the insides of the wheels, causing severe out-of-balance condition on the highway. I had to get out and get the snow out. Only an issue when back on the highway, though.

    Axle wrap sucks. I have SUA so it's FAR less noticeable and rarely happens anymore. But for SOA, it can be a real pain in the ass.

    Depending on what leaf pack you guys put on and how high of a rear lift, you may want to look into axle shims or a carrier bearing drop to get the rear axle pinion inline with stock. Tacoma's have a CV based driveshaft so you want the pinion pointing at the carrier bearing (or transfer case for single cabs). I normally drop the pinion 2 degrees from inline to compensate for axle wrap.

    This will cause a steering wheel shimmy (left to right) and not necessarily a hop.

    SUA = Spring Under Axle
    SOA = Spring Over Axle (factory).

    My springs go UNDER the rear axle to allow more uptravel and support my offroading bad habits.

    Every truck is different. Best way is to get an angle finder and put it on the driveshaft and take a measurement. Then put it on your pinion and take a measurement. If the difference between the two angles is 90* then your pinion is pointing dead nuts at your carrier bearing. If it's not, adjust accordingly.
