    hey guys,

im starting to get fed up with my e locker and looking into the options to get rid of it. I have an 05 offroad with the 8" e locker diff and im thinking of swapping to the 8.4" sport diff so i can throw an ARB lcoker in there and get rid of the electronics. ive seen plenty of threads where guys swapped out the entire axle from a sport and put in the e locker axle but nothing the other way around. has anyone here done it and if so where there any major issues or should this be a pretty straight forward thing? thanks for your help!

It should be easier than the opposite swap.
Just gotta run an air line and the electronics to the compressor/switch.

One thing to try though since I don't have a second gen and don't know about all the electronics gizmos and crap is to just unplug the eLocker at the pumpkin and make sure your 4x4 hi/low, ABS and all that still work. As far as the swap itself it'll be cake and you'll have a larger ring gear!

Yep, that's why I suggested to pull the plug on the locker and try everything first.

    Nope.
The TRD OR has a 8.0 ring gear, the TRD Sport has an 8.4" ring gear. Two different third members and different housings (slightly).

there might be a way to close the circuit, similar to bypassing a clutch-start switch, just making a fake connection that when you push the button, you get a return signal.

Haven't looked at my locker in a while, but if it's 2 wires, should be a quick job.

ya good idea. essentially id like to use the stock switch to engage the new locker. have one switch for the compressor then use the stock locker switch to engage it. since the locker is only engaged in 4 lo normaly i dont think not having the e locker there will make a difference. now if only i could find someone to trade axles with haha.

I believe the SR5 axle is the same 8.4" axle as the sport. Might be able to save some money by finding an open SR5 differential (although TRD Sport axles newer than 2008 will be open anyways, 2005 thru 2008 had a mechanical LSD).

Depends on your definition of 8" I guess and how your round.
The ring gears are NOT the same size. The 8.4" ring gear is 210mm (~8.25") compared to the 200mm (~7.9") ring gear in the 8" TRD OR.

An SR5 or base model V6 6lug truck will have what you are looking for in an axle, since you are planning to ditch any mechanical LSD the sport might have. V6 only to match your gearing, if you are still stock 3.73s

Should be easy to find someone to trade if yours is in decent condition.

well thats the other thing, i am still stock but id want to re gear to the 4.88 eventually so if i do get the arb locker do i do it now or should i wait till i re gear? can the locker work on either set of gears? ive found a couple axles here locally that are at a parts yard. basically 1095 for the drum to drum set up off a 2007 with the lsd in it. maybe i can sell the diff/gears that are in it and just put in my own 4.88 with the locker at once and save some time haha

The gears aren't that much $$$ compared to locker and install. Do it all once.

Meh...to me without pictures it's just another myth.

I still have a TRD ring gear in my garage. As I mentioned, it's a short hair less than 8", right arond 7 15/16. Yes, if you wanted to round it, you could round up and be at 8".

That said....here's a picture of toyota ring gears stacked up against an D44 8.5.

Front to back is IFS 7.5, 8.0, 8.4/8.25/T100/Tundra, and the rear is D44 8.5.

So although it's not very much bigger, I'm pretty sure it is bigger than the 8.0. And yes again if you wanted to round it and call it 8" you could, but I still think it's a little bigger than the TRD 8.0"

    OP....sorry for the thread derailment.
Ring gear sizes aside, I think Max and I will both agree the non-elocker third member is stronger than the elocker third.
