K and n air intake?

So my question would is it a good idea to put a K and N air intake on my 4 cyl?

And would I actually see any results in any places?

 

No and no.

More dirt, more hassle, more cost.

OEM filter is $15, needs replacing once every year or two, filters better than anything, and can flow more air than even the V6 can pull.

 

Well it would be of an on road only daily driver truck

Usage doesn't matter.
Even more important if you take it off road at all, but the K&N and other "washable" filters do not filter well and allow fine particles through that will score the cylinders and lead to increased oil consumption.

Another problem with the oiled filters is if they are not properly oiled, they will foul the MAF, leading to poor running, check engine light, and poor gas mileage.

The drop-in filter is around $55. You can buy 3 stock filters for that... and then you have to buy the cleaning/recharge kit for another $20.
$75 for the filter and kit, or enough OEM filters to carry you 150,000 to 300,000 miles (change interval is 60k, inspect at 30k).

And there is ZERO benefit to running the K&N or similar drop-in on a stock vehicle.

 

Better than K&N, but if you gave me one, I'd sell it on eBay and donate the money to charity.

 

If your looking for more engine sound and a little more HP then yes.

My honest opinion is that it was kind of a waste of $ for me to buy the K&N FIPK intake. If I could somehow put on a regular throw-away cone air filter then I'd do that because I actually do like the intake tube.

 

why is that?

 

OEM filters better and flows more than the engine can possibly use unless you have a supercharger.

The tradeoff for having an aftermarket filter is all negative. There is no benefit unless you count "BRAAAP"

 

ive had zero problems with my afe

 

i removed the secondary filter in my 09,changed to a k&n drop-in,and got 0 mileage increase.not 1 tiny bit.so a cold air kit is probably money down the drain.

 

When I ran a K&N, I sent the oil in for analysis and the silicone levels had spiked way up. They said it is usually the cause of dirt/grime and other contaminents getting into the engine. The only thing not stock was the K&N filter. So I changed it back to paper filters and all is well again. I won't use K&N or other aftermarket filters again.

 

I had K&N and they tend to make Tacoma's engine lights go off because it covers the MAF with so much crap. You will feel an increase in power, but K&N's are high maintenance because of the cleaning. I got an AEM Brute Force now since it requires no oil and maybe just have to take a hose to it every year or two and that's it.
You will get more power tho.

Ok so unfortunately my parents got me one already for Christmas and now after reading all of the posts I'm not sure what I should do with it now????

 

drop in filter? I had one worked well (ie no problems I noticed) until I went to recharge it (not first time I recharged one) and apparently I must have poured it on.. no clue but I did too much and soaked my charcoal filter and messed up MAF sensor.. so needless to say I removed it.. It worked wonders in my ford and chevy I had but my taco didn't like it at all...

 

my recommendation would be use it ..until you have an issue since you have it.. just be very careful with recharging it... if anything let it sit hanging for a few days after you do it just incase...

 

I like my K&N fipk... (don't like K&N's drop in element)
not really caring what the haters do or think

I used the original element for 12 years.
have never purchased another filter element for my junk during that time.

the original element developed a little dry rot (avoidable).
so I asked K&N for a replacement and they shipped that NCTM
so their lifetime warranty works great.

as well... I still have my oem AB/fuzzy w DP mod.
is sometimes installed when I know I'll be rolling wetter trails.
otherwise the fipk resides most always.

I've saved some money over the years
by not needing to purchase replacement filters.

I'd ruin a stock filter (oem AB) in just a weekend
is a 4X that gets used off road often

btw, paid $ 120. for my fipk back in the day.

 

If you check out my build you can see the difference between the K&N FIPK and the AEM Bruteforce. Get the Bruteforce and you won't be disappointed. I loved the K&N, just didn't like how it set my engine light off every few months.. :/
